This mysterious hole is at the base of a large Sumac tree. I have no idea who or what resides in there, but I am sure someone or something does. This particular tree, and about five more like it, have been here ever since we bought the place in 1998; they were this big in 1998 and are no bigger now; which is surprising considering that tiny little sprouts will grow ten or more feet in a year. In my area, Sumac is considered a weed and an extreme annoyance. It thrives in fence-rows, probably on account of birds sitting on the fence and relieving themselves of the seeds. Also, like Locust and Mimosa, new trees can sprout from the roots of an existing tree, often hundreds of feet from the existing tree. Every year, I chop them down; and, the next year, they will be back, five for each one I chopped down, twenty or thirty feet tall, and as big around as my arm. The wood is completely useless for any purpose and you would have to soak it in diesel fuel to get it too burn. I honestly don't know; it has been common ever since I can remember.
From what I read, birds just love the seeds. I saw a fossil of Sumac leaves that were ten gazillion years old. I guess Pterradactyles migrating through ate some seeds somewhere down in South America and relieved themselves as they passed over Kentucky and that is where we got our start.
According to what I have read, it actually does have some benefits as medicines and what have you; maybe if I could find out where the market is, I could finally get on my feet selling the seeds.

Poke a stick in there, I dare you! I bet you would ! I'll watch from around the corner. Sometimes, sleeping dogs and hornet's nests and such are best left alone.

Where’s your cute little sidekick, I’m sure she’d be curious about what could be living in that hole? Be sure to have your camera ready and any necessary safety gear you may deem appropriate.

You mean "Nosy Rosy" ; I can just see her all head and ears down on one knee, poking a stick in there. Be sure to have your camera ready and any necessary safety gear you may deem appropriate.
Like maybe the barrel of a Marlin 39A instead of a stick ?
If something in there growled, she would be up on my shoulders quicker than a squirrel up a tree.

"You Sure this Stick is Long Enough ?"=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x= Friday_22-April-2022 I had hoped she would really get up close and personal in her investigation, but this is as close as she was a going to get. I bet that little bare-footed skint and scarred all over little girl with all the cats would have crawled right in there.
