Female Pileated Woodpecker
Just to be clear, if a Kentuckian talks about a Red-Headed Woodpecker, he is meaning a Pileated Woodpecker.
Know how I know it is a female; look right HERE.
This may or may not be the same Woodpecker that momentarily landed on the gatepost within inches of my head on Saturday_21-May-2022.
For days, I have been hearing the deep, rapid, drumming way back in the woods.
This morning, this dude was loudly cackling like a hen in a foxes mouth; it kept this up the entire day. The wife and I were in the driveway and I asked her what could be making such a horrible cackling noise and she said "Probably that Woodpecker that I see right through there."
Sure enough, it was frantically flying from tree to tree, staying in one small area around the treehouse and continuously cackling; obviously in extreme distress about something, although I know not what.
This thing is huge, as big as a decent-sized Rooster.
Here is what All About Birds, Audubon, e-Birds, ABC Birds, and Wikipedia have to say about them.

BuckSkin,
Wonderful pictures you posted of the woodpecker!! The link you posted to "the same Woodpecker" is going to the wrong post I suspect as it is talking about owls dying from the avian flu.
