Male Common Whitetail Skimmer DragonflySunday_19-June-2022When I was a kid, nobody called Dragonflies "Dragonflies"; they were called Snake Doctors. Until I was eight- or ten-yrs-old, I actually thought they would doctor a sick snake. I never heard them called "Dragonfly" until I was old enough to vote.
You can learn all about them at Insect Identification.
You can learn all about Dragonflies in general at National Geographic, Britannica, Animal Corner, and Wikipedia.
Now, take a look at the transformer and notice the bullet wounds and shotgun pellet marks. This is the transformer to our house and is about sixty feet from the front corner. Fortunately, it hasn't yet been shot by anything with enough power to penetrate the case; those wounds were probably caused by something in the 9mm pop-pistol class, or possibly a .223/5.56mm M-16/AR15; a .30-06 would have went in one side, out the other, and through the pole. I am acquainted with all the local linemen and they say that there isn't a transformer in the county that hasn't been shot at least once.

I guess in some parts of the country, if you have a gun, everything sitting still is a target! We took a jeep tour near Santa Fe a few years ago, and there was a sign out on the reservation that had more holes than metal. I get it--too tempting to resist.
