Robber Fly Asilidae
There are over 6,750 varieties and appearances of these; but, of all the many varieties, this one is always at the top of the page.
This thing is beyond tiny, almost microscopic.
I first thought it was a mosquito; but, a mosquito's legs are much spindlier; this things legs are much more robust than those of a mosquito.
I was standing in a forest of Mare's Tail, most standing about armpit high.
After I spotted this tiny dude, about a foot away, I noticed that every Mare's Tail in the vicinity had one of these little critters on the very tip of the top-most leaf.
A Mare's Tail has many many leaves, from the ground to the top; but, these little guys were only interested in the very tip of the top-most leaf; I never saw one on the second leaf down, nor on any other leaf.
Here is what Featured Creatures, Britannica, and Wikipedia have to say about them.

Taken with a Sigma 50/500mm at extreme close range. That's one small fly for sure. Neat photos. Were you using tubes or something else to get in that close?

Where's the flyspray when you need it?

No; just the lens. Actually, I was surprised I could do it; that dude was less than a foot from the front glass. Surprisingly, it would autofocus at 50mm; I would then manually focus as I zoomed in until it would not focus any closer. According to EXIF, the first two are at 244mm and the third at 203mm.
