Male Eastern Tailed Blue Butterfly on Eastern Red Cedar
These little dudes are tiny; smaller than a dime. The top side of the males' wings are a bright blue and the females' are a purplish-brown slate color. Like many of the smaller butterflies, it is nigh impossible to capture them with their wings spread; the instant they light, they close their wings together, making them near impossible to spot.
You can learn all about them at Prairie Haven, Bug Guide, Butterflies at Home, Insect Identification, Butterfly Identification, Butterflies and Moths, and Wikipedia.
