Wednesday_08-June-2022Nodding Thistle or Musk Thistle Carduus nutans
I have been here since 1998 and have been all over this seven acres of diverse Flora countless times each year; and, this is the very first of these I have ever seen on our place.
Funny thing is, it is not growing in some back side fencerow, but right beside the driveway in deep creek-gravel and #5 Limestone Rock where it has been regularly boom-sprayed several times each summer; for whatever reason, that area missed getting sprayed this spring.
As seen here, there is a single stalk with a single bloom; by 20th June, twelve days later, it had developed what Tobacco growers would call a "sucker" = the stalk branched lower down with a smaller bloom on that branch.
By the end of the month, both blooms had pretty much dried up.
You can learn all about them at US Forest Service and Wikipedia.
I hope you like it.

Strange you should say that, BuckSkin. I have two thistles growing near the shed. Never seen before. I am waiting for the buds to open, to take a photo. Then dig them out.

Unfortunately, some species of thistle are noxious weeds. Even more unfortunately for our neighbors to the North, one of the worst is named after them! cjt

He is on what will soon be another bloom.
You can read all about them at Insect Week and Wikipedia.
I very much appreciate everyone's comments and participation.
Keep an eye on this thread as I have several more photos to post and information to share.
