Praying Mantis
I had just been thinking that I hadn't seen a live Praying Mantis in years.
I was bush-hogging fender-high weeds in Henry's lot and was down to the last couple passes when I saw the first of these two escaping from the path of the bush-hog.
As I had not seen one in years, I decided to climb down off the tractor and capture it for photographs; that is when I saw the second, smaller, one; I caught it as well.
With a fighting Praying Mantis in each gloved hand, I headed to the house to find a couple jars; I thought it best to keep them separate.
I first photographed them on the porch, but they didn't photograph well there; so, I placed them in this Cedar tree.
Like an old cat, they immediately went to licking and cleaning themselves as I had read they would; you can see this activity in several of the photos.
I have seen much larger ones than these.
In a couple shots, I held my two-bladed Muskrat knife alongside them for comparison.
The black bone-handle section of the knife is 2-11/16" long, as shown alongside the larger of the two.
Alongside the smaller of the two, from the tip of the bolster to the left/far edge of the medallion is 2".
You can learn all about them at National Geographic for Kids, Tree Hugger, and Wikipedia.
Be sure and watch this VIDEO.
Always when bush-hogging high weeds, all the insects and small animals that flee before you always flee into the uncut section; until, when there is only a narrow strip left, you chase all of them out into the open.
Moments before seeing these Praying Mantis, I saw the largest Katydid I have ever seen and he was as yellow as a Poplar leaf; I had never seen a yellow one before.
I hope you enjoy them; thanks for looking.
