A couple, or more, problems. I don't know how the grey got on there. The background was all black. When I put the last photo on (right hand side), I lowered the opacity while I erased some of it for the rose to show through. When I had done that, I put the opacity back up again. But, as you see, the image has stayed dim. I tried several times - with the same result. I later noticed that on the layers panel that photo has stayed dim. Also, in the layers panel, the active layer kept changing from that layer, down to background layer. That is when I decided to shout for help. It is far too hot here for frustrations.

Margaret,
please click on the DSCF7033.jpg layer and be sure the blendmode is normal and and the opacity on that layer is 100%. Just looking at your layer stack, I would say it's not.

Maybe try turning off visibility of each layer to discover the source

When I have trouble with jumping layers, I find Control/Command T - Transform helps. Alternately - Image> Transform> Free Transform
Transform is part of the Move Tool and it's helpful for tiny items - especially text layers - where it's difficult to grab the item on your project to move it around.
Transform is especially handy for the layer jumping problem. Go over to the layer panel, click on your troublesome layer, and choose either method listed above to use Transform.

I don't know how the grey got on there. The background was all black. I believe that's a portion of your large flower photo. When you had it less opaque, it probably didn't show up enough to erase it. As already been mentioned, turn off all layers and turn each one off and on individually. You will easily see what layer that gray area is part of.

Also, in the layers panel, the active layer kept changing from that layer, down to background layer. I'm not sure this will apply here but the culprit for what you describe could be the Move Tool. Did you have it activated? Turn off the "Auto Select Layer" setting in the Tool Options area. The "layer-jumping" behavior should stop.

I could conjecture till the cows come home Margaret but without seeing your file I’m not quite sure what has happened here but as has been suggested I would start to diagnose layer by individual layer. Check each one as to Blend Mode and opacity and hopefully you will find the offending layer and be able to rectify it. You will find the Blend Modes and the Opacity slider at the top of your layers stack.
I just checked and confirmed that with the background layer locked as is shown in the screenshot of your layers panel it is impossible to reduce the opacity of that layer. If you unlock the BG layer and then reduce the opacity the chequered transparency shows through so I can’t help thinking that your problem has more to do with whatever happened when you were working with your image layer DSCF7033.jpg.
As far as jumping layers is concerned I’m afraid I come up against that more times than I would like and I haven’t found a way round it other than to be as vigilant as possible and try to catch it when it happens. Personally I think it’s a bug in PSE and a most frustrating one.

Sorry for the delay. Thank you all for your most welcome help, and suggestions. As you all know, I never have screen shots of the layers panel. So considered I had done well to remember that. Unfortunately, I did the same as always, and deleted everything when I finished. When I can raise the energy, I will try it again - with your suggestions.
Many thanks.

I’m sorry you have had this difficulty Margaret. I hope you don’t mind me saying but it really is a good practice to save your projects initially as a psd file and then when you are sure you are happy with it you can save as a jpg and delete the psd file. Hopefully you will be able to visit this again and I look forward to seeing the finished page.
