I'm a big believer in one of the last thoughts in the article>>>
"There is one rule that I think should be prescriptive and invariably ignored by too many photographers; putting thought into how our photographs look."

Peterj , I've judged a couple of times in gallery shows and don't subscribe to a set of rules. For me, it's all about the impact of the image. How does it make me feel? What does it tell me about the photographer? Am I able to discern what the photographer is trying to convey? Those are the types of things I look for...not if the horizon is centered (however, if it's not level, it will bother me a LOT), or if there's a little teensy hot spot in the sky! I belong to 2 camera clubs (and have belonged to others in the past) and the most annoying thing is when a judge tries to apply cooky cutter rules to the images he or she is judging. GRRRRRR--it's so frustrating!!! (Now I'll go read the article! LOL)
Ok...read the article and it makes a lot of sense. I've read many with the same viewpoint. I just wish the judges would 'get' it!

It should be noted that the author of this article, Ivor Rackman, was a member of Elements Village. Perhaps some of our former Villagers remember him. When the Village split up, he and others created a Facebook forum centered around Photoshop Elements.

Definitely worth noting! Thanks for pointing that out, PeteB.

Seems to me that guidelines for landscape compositions, etc. have been erroneously turned into rules. These guidelines (aka "rules") work for most things and are typically safe to follow for a good composition, especially for beginning photographers. However, it does mean that these guidelines are the only method for creating other types of effective compositions.

Sorry, I left out the word "not" in the last sentence. "it does not mean that these guidelines ...".
