Carriage Rides in Historic Charleston, South Carolina There are numerous carriage ride companies in Charleston, several of them sharing walls in the same block.

Belgian Blonde pulling a carriage for Old South Carriage Works.
Steel Grey and a Barouche
I am fairly certain the Belgian in the foreground is the same as in the previous two photos.
This is horse barn and headquarters of Old South Carriage Works.
HERE is info about Old South Carriage Works and HERE and HERE are two short videos.
My wife took the photos; I did the RAW conversion and enhancing. Somebody had to stay home and feed Henry.
After seeing the prices, I feel very fortunate to have gone on numerous mule/wagon rides and never got my billfold out of my pocket.
Like the Merle Watson song says "I'm going back and spend some time where a man can have fun when he ain't got a dime I'm Southbound."

BuckSkin, we took a carriage tour when we were in Charleston in 2017. Same company but we had a 4-seater (which was considerably less expensive 5 years ago!) for 3 of us. We were there on a photo tour and this was the day after--we shared this time with a new friend from Australia who we met on that tour and she joined us for the carriage ride. It's a wonderful way to see Charleston and learn a bit of the history from the knowledgeable guides. Your wife was lucky to be able to experience this, too!

Your wife was lucky to be able to experience this I guess you could say she is double-lucky as they took the tour with the same company in 2018. The way I understand it is you never know exactly what route you will take and may take an entirely different route each time you visit; something to do with ensuring each company gets equal access to each route with no congestion.
She finally admitted that complete and all, they paid some over $50 per person for an hour tour and there are sixteen seats in the carriage. They fill every seat.
I have dealt with horses all my life and it doesn't take a mathematical genius to figure $800 per hour per horse/carriage/driver.
Of course, the city is probably taking a fourth of that; but still, $600/hour is better than any trackhoe around here is getting and you can take what a trackhoe costs and fill a barn full of horses and wagons.
I hope my mule/wagon buddies never catch on to that; my free rides might come to an end.

my free rides might come to an end. Yes, but you enjoy it. It is like taking photos for free. When you (I) should be charging $100 per hour. But we enjoy and and get satisfaction from what we do. Coincidently, my last freebie photo shot was of horses. (Posted here a few weeks ago.) Unlike you, I have never been around horses much but they are awesome animals. Well except Uncle Edwin's Snipper who love to bite. And Uncle Johnny's Blackie who got cranky when she was more than half a mile from the barn and once went "hell bent for leather" with me atop (bareback) and she dumped me on some dried mud ruts. Ouch! Mind you that was over 60 years ago. Thanks for the carriage-ride photos.

It has been a lifelong ambition of mine, to have a ride on one of these. They are used by the gypsies. I have always been tempted, to stop one, and ask if I could have a ride. But, never had the nerve.

Wonderful. So that is where 7th Heaven is. If 7th Heaven is the poverty capitol of the world, then Yes; it is a place where a man can have fun when he ain't got a dime.
In Kentucky, the only event people will pay good money to see is a Demolition Derby; they can't tell you who the Governor or the President is, but they can rattle off the last three Demolition Derby winners.
