This Creative Effects Challenge will show you how to create a Watercolor image using Layers in Photoshop Elements or the full version of Photoshop.

Please read thru the entire tutorial before you start.
Let’s get started:
1. Open an image that you want to create a Watercolor from.
2. Duplicate the layer (Ctrl/CMD+j). Rename it Effects.
3. On the Effects layer go to Filter>Filter Gallery>Artistic>Dry Brush with the following settings:
a. Brush Size - 10
b. Brush Detail - 0
c. Texture - 1
4. Click on the New Effect Layer icon at the bottom and click on Watercolor with the following settings:
a. Brush Size - 1
b. Shadow Intensity - 0
c. Texture - 1
5. Now click OK.
6. Duplicate the layer (Ctrl/CMD+j). Rename it Watercolor.
7. Select the Effects Layer, add a new layer, and rename it Texture.
8. Fill this layer with White.
9. Go to Filter>Texture>Texturizer with the following settings:
a. Texture - Canvas or Sandstone
b. Scaling - 200%
c. Relief - 4
d. Light - Top
10. Click OK.
11. Select the Watercolor layer, add a Layer Mask, and fill it with Black. To fill it with Black, hold down the Option/Alt key as you add the Layer Mask.
12. Press b on your keyboard to select the Brush tool.
13. Open your brush options, click on the down arrow next to the Brush, and find the Wet Media Brushes. Select Watercolor Textured Surface from the drop down menu. In Photoshop this brush is located in the Legacy Brushes (that you have to Load), Wet Media Brushes.

14. Select White as your foreground color.
15. Make sure the black layer mask is selected.
16. With a brush, set the size as needed and with the brush Opacity at 20% start painting on the image. The more you click in an area the more the Watercolor effect will show thru.
Final Layer Stack
Here is an action that will get you most of the way (thru step 11). Now select the brush and make sure the layer mask is selected and start painting with white to reveal the watercolor.
