VickiD ......how did you enlarge? Did you enlarge in increments or to the desired size? Helen, I enlarged straight to 4 times the original, via Gigapixel. Did a bit of tweaking to retain the details and then the other processing (with that same goal in mind).

I've been through the shock and sadness of the sudden and unexpected passing of a loved one. My condolences to his parents for their loss. I hope they will take comfort in the efforts here to enhance one of their favorite photos of their son. In the quest to make the photo as large as possible without too much deterioration in quality I made some basic adjustments in tones and contrast and then ran the results through Topaz Gigapixel to 3x the original size. Then I did a crop to remove some distractions and also suppressed the background in term of clarity, contrast and luminance. My final step was to once again use Gigapixel to double the size of the enlargement. The final image is 7140 pixels wide by 9456 pixels tall (23.8"W x 31.52"H at 300 pixels/inch. I hope it may be of some use.

With a lesser quality photo, the idea of adding texture is brilliant. Camouflages flaws while adding a nice effect.
Alternately, one could get it printed on canvas. That would also hide the fact that the quality of the original photo was not the best.
