To see something well worth seeing, go to eBird, then click the big picture to open the slide show, then use the right arrow key to advance to the final picture; a Chincoteague Island Wild Pony absolutely covered with Brown-headed Cowbirds.
Over the years, I have seen these birds sitting on horses, and more so on cattle, but never in such a quantity.
My old Buckskin horse, Misty, the best horse I ever owned, and probably the best anyone ever owned, had a Cowbird to take up with her and stay with her everywhere she went in the big pasture.
Many times, I have seen this bird perched on her back and even riding through the field.
There were three other horses in there, but the bird only ever stayed with the Buckskin.
Of an evening, I would let the horses across the driveway and into their barn stalls, and the bird would disappear.
The next morning, when the Buckskin came back out into the big field, the bird would reappear and stay with her all day.
This went on until old age finally took the old Buckskin away.
Let me know what you think about that picture.

Great photos BuckSkin. I love the one with the two birds facing each other and appearing to have a conversation. Re the horse with the cowbirds...I have never seen anything like that before. The horse doesn’t look bothered or am I wrong because I don’t know that much about horses.

I figure the pony would rather have the birds than a pack of biting flies; I doubt a fly would get a chance to bite before he would get ate by a bird.

That's an amazing photo, BuckSkin! Looks like that horse is carrying around an entire flock of birds! I've never seen anything like that. We used to get these birds at our feeders and I wasn't too fond of them because of their parasitic nature. I had read that they demanded so much food that the babies that belonged there would starve. Not a good visual!

These birds are here as well. They have a nasty trait in that they do not build nests. The female lays one or two eggs in nests of other species. So (say) little goldfinches feed and raises the young cowbirds. The larger cowbird young are larger and more aggressive at feeding time and get more food than the young goldfinches. I wasn't too fond of them because of their parasitic nature. Yes. not good.
