Well, a few weeks ago, I lost an expensive, fast SD card. I searched everywhere: floors, under furniture, pockets in pants, shirts and jackets. Nope. It was $159 CAD and I was unhappy. Today, home management decreed that I needed to clean the shirts and pants off the "tree" in my corner of the bedroom...I had amassed quite a collection. A few items were returned to the tree (with a promise that I would wear them) and a few were put into the wash. My wife then did a load of laundry and when done the elusive card was in the bottom of the washing machine tub. I had heard they were quite durable and survive being washed. The images on the card (that I had download on August 10) were all viewable. I formatted the card and ran a few tests. It seems totally fine. So if you are going to wash an SD card, just use cold water, regular cycle and Kirkland laundry soap.

I know of several occasions where cameras have been found in creeks and places where they have been outside in the weather for several years; in every case I know of, the memory card survived and whatever photos were on it were in great shape.
Not so much now, since everyone but me has put their pocket cameras in the junk drawer; but, several years ago, just every little bit there would be someone on FaceBook post some pictures and say "Do you know these people --- my husband was fishing/hunting/gold-panning and found this camera in the creek" ; the dates on the photos might be five years old.

About 12 years ago I found a Pentax Optio 10 on a trout stream. I did exactly that: posted a few photos here and there. The owner was never found so I used the camera for 2 or 3 years before getting a better waterproof P&S for fishing. The cards do seem quite robust.

I too have washed an sd card. No problems! I think I used Tide.

The proof has been made: There is no reason at all to parade around with a dirty SD card in our devices.

Several years ago now but went FPV Quad racing with group of mates, on the last races I had mishap and quad went tumbling across the field and lost the sd card, all of a year later out with the lads I had another mishap and one of the lads near to the crash picked it up for me and picked up the sd card, just doing quick repair to fly again and noticed my card was still in it, the card he picked up was the card I had lost from previous year and was like new apart from bit of dirt on it.
