This you tube video is a must for anyone producing black and white images. Even though it is nearly two hours long it is worth every minute you spend on it. Eileen Rafferty comes across as an expert teacher with great examples to support the points she makes. She gives the best articulation of why you might choose black and white instead of colour that I have seen. m.youtube.com/watch?v=V8Hh8S-Z68s

Chris,
A totally compelling lecture. I'm watching it in chunks of twenty minutes at a time (rewarding myself for doing twenty minutes housework!!) and am really enjoying it. She is an excellent teacher. Thanks for posting.

Chris, this was a wonderful class for anyone interested in black and white photography. She was an excellent teacher who introduced each new idea with plenty of visual examples and continuous reinforcement of the key concepts. I especially liked how she emphasized the idea of crafting your black and white images. Although she showed how this might be done in LR, it can certainly be explored in other programs as well. I took a couple of pages of notes and am looking forward to viewing the work of Alexander Rodchenko who she noted for creating images with unique perspectives.

Excellent video tutorial on the subject, Chris. I watched about half of it so far and plan on watching the rest of it this weekend. It is quite informative and in fact, even inspired me for my latest personal gallery entry. On our drive up the coast yesterday I was already "seeing" (potential subjects) "in black and white". Unfortunately, my wife wasn't interested in me slowing down our trip progress by stopping the car to take photos.

Thanks for commenting Jim and glad you are finding it helpful even before you have seen it all. ?doesn't your wife realise that sacrifices have to be made for art?

Yeah, but usually she doesn't want to be the one sacrificed. She does fairly often anyway though. Happy wife - happy life ya know.
