Took our DIL and granddaughter to Waterton Lakes NP yesterday specifically to find a bear or two. Nope. It is peak elk rutting season and they came out of the aspen woods right on queue around 5 PM. Unfortunately, they are about 300 m away and you can't leave the viewing road. I get it, the parks people do not want to disturb the elk. It would be easy to set up a photography blind in the daytime when they are in the woods but that would not be allowed. Anyway, here are are shots of some of the ~150 elk that came out. The two photos are taken about 50 minutes apart in totally different light: late-day sun and after the sun set behind the mountains.

Great photos Clive, those antlers look very impressive from this distance.

Thanks Jacki. Antlers on big bull elk are impressive. A friend sent me an elk update this evening. She lives only 15 minutes from the park. Today, a bull and his harem were just off a road we drove yesterday. She was able to photograph them from 50 meters vs 300 m. Oh well.
