Here's how I started. I think I used a greeting card program to make this. You know - it's just a hop, skip, and a jump (and a few cute embellishments) to full on digital scrapbooking. Or maybe I used Microsoft Word since there is no extra stuff on this "layout" and greeting card programs came with background papers and clip art and I can't imagine I wouldn't have added some stuff to the pages if it was available.I was poking around in an old EHD yesterday.
This was my first trip to Europe - it started with 5 days in London, then 3 days in Copenhagen - then the cruise. What a wonderful memory. Still one of my favorite trips.

The simple answer to what digital Scrapbooking is - it's an offshoot of paper scrapbooking.
It all started when people got tired of just mounting a few photos in a scrapbook and decided to dress up their pages. It probably started with fancy lettering cut out of colored construction paper and then adding things like pressed flowers and ticket stubs - momentos of the occasion - to the photo album.
Back in those days, places like Hallmark sold albums where all sorts of things were printed on a page and all you had to do is glue your photos on it and add some text about the day. There were entire albums already done for us. Then we decided we could do that ourselves.
The hobby went big time when the hobby shops started making all sorts of trinkets to dress up scrapbook pages.
Then, we got tired of buying the stuff. It was expensive, it was one use, it was permanent (once you glued something down, you couldn't change your mind) and a new vision was formed.
Once scanners became user friendly and cheap and digital cameras became mainstream - there was no stopping the ingenuity of creative people.
What if we could put those photos and text on a nice colored background? And what if we took a little clip art and added it?
Then we found out all this stuff was reusable. It was recolorable. It was repositionable. It was so much cheaper. A hobby was born. Digitally designed dressed up collages -- digital scrapbooking.
Then the hobby was fueled by forums like this one - where we could share our work - our ideas - and we could help others learn.

This is an example of a digital scrapbook page I did for my recent project. I used a free template and moved the boxes around a bit. I kept all the pages to an 8"X8" size and printed them on my printer. (p.s. the colors are actually darker and richer than what postimage.org brought in......)

Excellent layout. The way the photos overlap is what makes the placement work. (What I love about using templates is the ability to shift and resize and remove any layer just like you say you did.)
Your word art really enhances the subject matter.
As for creating in 8x8 - it isn't necessary to start with 8x8 to print at 8x8 and if you start using scrapbook kits, you will find starting with 8x8 will be inconvenient as everything from the scrapbook kit will have to be resized. The standard in digital scrapbooking is 12x12 with 300 resolution (3600x3600 pixels)
Creating in 12x12 has no disadvantages. You can always print at home in 8x8 from your 12x12 projects.

Thanks! ....one of the reasons I did this album in 8"X 8" was to be able to bring the image directly into Photobook Canada's 8X8 softbook. I didn't want to have to try and fit the image into the template because I seem to be pretty bad at doing that! [I made these for two XMAS presents - one set I printed directly to my printer and inserted into a photo album, and the other set (for my son), I had printed into a softcover so that it would be less bulky when he flew back to Edmonton after XMAS.
Scrapbooking is so much easier on the computer that I am now getting rid of all my scrapbooking supplies!

srmoment - that was definitely a very good reason for creating in 8x8. What a nice gift idea.

Step 2 - on to basic digital scrapbooking. This was after I got PSE4 and was learning how to use the PSE tools using tutorials from my "Digital Scrapbooking in Easy Steps" book. I made those two background papers using brushes and that was my first attempt at a torn edge. Wow - I don't think I mastered that at all. LOL I can see metallic styles on my text. And I was heavy into bevels in those years. I would bet these attempts at creating my own digital stuff is what sent me to purchase some real digital scrapbooking kits by real artists. It's so much fun to look back. I'm not sure why I kept this one, but now I'm glad I did. Wish I had been more careful about dating my layouts.

Finally, I got some nice kits and things got better...
My brother-in-law took these photos from his upper deck using a telephoto lens. I've always loved these photos.

I was inspired to try and find some of my first digital scrapbooking pages, and came up with this one of my Grandparents on their honeymoon. i.imgur.com/FoC5y4j.jpg

Janice love the deer and how you scrapped them. I also love the word art. It brings the pictures to life in a different way…
jackscrap both lovely pages. What an absolutely sweet photo to have of your grandparents and nice to record it in this way. Same with your second page of three generations together. Lovely memory pages to keep.
