It's Saturday and time for a new CE Challenge. This time it is a very quick way to create a watercolour effect. I saw this on the back page of the Digital Photo magazine, and I must say, it is super quick! I started with this photo, which I cropped slightly to get rid of some of the sky before applying the effect. Step 1Open your photo in Photoshop Elements and duplicate the Background Layer twice by pressing Ctrl+J. Now click on the top layer to activate it and go to Filter-Stylize-Find Edges. This will create some coloured outlines, but we need them to be monochrome, so hit Ctrl+Shift+U. You should now have a black and white sketch in front of you. Open the Levels box by pressing Ctrl+L and move the sliders under the Histogram to get more of a sketch effect. Play around a little until you have something that you are happy with. Click ok and then change the Blend Mode from Normal to Multiply. Step 2Now click on the middle Layer to active it and go to Filter-Blur-Gaussian Blur. Increase the Radius slider until the blur spills over the outlines of the sketch. Press Ctrl+U, which will bring up the Hue/Saturation palette and increase the Saturation to get some punchy colours and increase the Lightness a little. Again, play around until you are happy with the effect. There, that's it - you are done.

Totally cool! Thanks Simone for putting this together for us. Here is what I came up with (click on it to get a better view of it).

This was fun and easy to do! Original: Watercolor effect: I'll have to plug in my hard drive and find more pics to do this to!

Thanks, Simone. At the end layered my finished watercolor above the original and changed the blend mode to screen at a reduced opacity. Looking at everyone's results I think my meddling with the tut resulted in an image that doesn't have the intended effect....I will need to try this again.

Quick & Easy effect; thanks for sharing it @storkington ! The only change I made was to bring back the eye, which had gotten lost in the effect. (click for larger view)
