Thanks, Sepiana . I am now trying to get the glass look but not having much success....perhaps because I didn't follow the original directions for size of the image. Anyway, I created a layer as Frank suggests and then added your glass texture on top.....still not happy with it but will post. Helen, try those suggestions I sent you. Hopefully they will help with this.

... ... 1. Create a new image with the following settings. I'm not really into "art" or special effects images but this stained glass effect has reeled me in. I have some photos that will look great, especially in print, with this stained glass effect. Now I just have to find some time to play around with this. At this point, since I will be eventually printing my result, I just want to offer a tip to anyone following this thread who is also thinking of printing their result. The settings in the above image are used for setting document sizes with respect to the print size. But if you will want to print the document, the resolution (ppi) should really be at least 300ppi for good quality prints. If you envisage your final result will be viewed only on a screen then you may as well set the document size to the actual pixel dimensions you want with any ppi value you like. PPI is meaningless for images viewed on a screen. Eg. a 1000px x 600px image will look exactly the same in size on a given screen whether you set the ppi to 72, 150, 300 or whatever. If you want to print your result it would be a pity to create the original image size at too low a resolution which might allow you to make a good quality 6"x 4" but a poor quality much larger print size. The settings below can be used for setting document sizes for images that will not be printed and viewed only on screen. Note: the PPI value can be anything you like for screen only display. Just some food for thought

Bailey,
Since your not into these special effects, the size of the document that is used at the start is to standardize it so that everyone get's the same or very similar results. It has nothing to do with printing your image.
The members images that are added at the end would vary in size. All of the image that I used in this creative effect challenge, were at 300 as they came from a Nikon, anyone using a Sony would be at 240, a Canon would be at 72. That template size worked with all of them and they produced great results.

fotofrank .....I tried this again. I tweaked the directions you added for creating the glass and am much happier with the results. And, like Sepiana. I just had to do another one......have a feeling it won't be my last.

All I care about is selecting the highest image dimensions in camera. If you then divide those dimensions by 300, you will have a good indication of the maximum size for a good quality print you can get from the camera. Eg if a camera maximum image pixel dimensions are 2100 x 1800 (round numbers for demo purposes) then the largest good quality print you can get is 7" x 6". It doesn't matter at all if the in camera ppi is 72, 240, 300 or anything else. If I used the document size settings in your posted image and then tried to make an A3+ (483mm x 329mm) sized print (the size of most of my prints), it would be of poor quality. Your settings would produce a document size of 750px x 1050px = 0.79MP. To make a good quality A3+ print the pixel dimension at 300ppi would need to be 5705px x 3886px = 22.2MP. Obviously 0.79MP is a long way short of the 22.2MP I need to make an A3+ print. I will be setting up a new document with length 483mm, height 329mm and ppi set to 300. Then I am assured of getting a good quality print at the end. The point I was making is that if anyone following your tutorial will want to print their final result, they need to set up their document size correctly at the start.

Helen,
I agree they are getting better. The tree looks fantastic!
The clear glass looks very realistic.

Thanks fotofrank . The tree is my favorite, too. I am going to print it for a photo assignment......I had set it up with printing in mind originally. That is why I ran into an issue with creating the glass. But all is good now. Thanks also to Sepiana for help with the glass.

This is my first attempt. Like hmca, I used a gradient and instead of a grid I used the Stained Glass Texture. The only thing I don't like is that I feel I am looking at the background through a chicken wire fence I'll have to tinker with it to make it look more realistic.

This is version 2, but still has the "looking through chicken wire" feel

Bailey - Thanks for joining. I agree it has the chicken wire look as the edge of the image defines that you appeared to wrap it with wire.

You don't have to use "squares" when you create the glass patterns.

Helen, I love your gymnast. It would never have occurred to me to use a black silhouette. Great Effect!
