So not only are you getting the Creative Effects Challenge a little early - it's one that will create a template that you can use over and over again.
For this week's Creative Effect's Challenge - We are going to create this stained-glass effect as a template that you can use on any image. After you create it just save it as a PSD or TIFF and you have your template.
Final Version
Let's get started. All screen shot's are from Elements 15, however it's about the same in other versions.
1. Create a new image with the following settings.
This will work on either Portrait or Landscape layouts.
2. Create a new blank layer. DO NOT DUPLICATE THE BACKGROUND LAYER
3. Select this new blank and go to View and check Grid. The shortcut is Ctrl+' (PC) or Cmd+' (MAC)
4. Your screen should now have a grid applied to it. Depending on how your preferences are set up it should like one of these.
5. Select all. The shortcut is Ctrl+a(PC) or Cmd+a (MAC)
6. Set your foreground color to Medium Grey (808080)
7. Goto Edit>Stroke. The settings are 10px, Inside and the color is the medium grey you just set.
8. You now need to deselect the selection, go to Select>Deselect of use the shortcut Ctrl+d (PC) or Cmd+d (MAC)
9. Now you need to create the grid.
10. With a Hard Brush set to 10px and 100% hardness, Click on one top of the 1 inch grid lines and while holding down the shift key click on the opposite end of that grid line. Holding down the shift key will allow you to draw a straight line.
11. Do this for the other nine 1 inch grid lines to create this.
12. You should now have this.
13. Rename this layer Color.
14. Duplicate this layer. The shortcut is Ctrl+j (PC) or Cmd+j(MAC)
15. Rename this top layer to Grid.
16. Turn off the grid - go to View and uncheck Grid. The shortcut is Ctrl+' (PC) or Cmd+' (MAC).
17. Select the Color layer.
18. With the paint bucket tool fill each square with a different color to create this.
a. ff0000 (Red)
b. 00ff00 (Green)
c. 0000ff (Blue)
d. ffff00 (Yellow)
e. 00ffff (Cyan)
f. ff00ff (Magenta)
You can recolor any square at any point.
19. Select the GRID Layer and apply styles to get the metal look. They include - drop shadow, outer glow, bevel, and stroke.
Here are my settings
20. Change the Blendmode of the color layer to Color, you can experiment with other blendmodes and opacity.
21. Select the Background Layer.
22. Select and Copy an image that you want to apply this effect to and Paste it above the background layer - resize as needed.
Final Layer Stack
As you have just created a template, you can always replace your image at any time - no need to recreate. If you need to apply to a landscape image, just rotate it before you insert your image. Remember to say the file as a PSD or TIFF.
