This looks like a fascinating thread which seems to have fallen through the cracks for me. Not too sure how I haven't noticed it before this. I am going to go through it with a fine tooth comb as there looks like there is a lot that can be learned from it. I definitely agree with BillieJean that mastering clipping masks can add a completely new dimension to ones images.

So glad you are finding it helpful, Sydney....that was part of my original plan. If you try something it might be good if you can post it in this thread. As a result Lillias will then have created a good resource for using clipping masks.

Just a little addendum to the foregoing. If you clip a photo to a mask and you can still see the straight edges of the photo as in example 3 below then you need to either resize the mask or the photo. You can also add a drop shadow to the mask if you wish. Just make sure your mask layer is selected and then add your shadow or bevel etc: Have a play it’s so much fun once you get to grips with clipping masks and layer masks.

Definitely will do although I am going to be stretched for time today as I will be popping out in few minutes and not back until this evening.

For anyone who might be interested - If you go to the link below you can get some nice masks for free. Just keep scrolling down the page for more. At the bottom of some of them you will see a little 'Read more' button. Click that and you will get information on how to use that particular item. There is one called 'Shadowhouse Creations Tint and Mask Generator Kit' which I find particularly interesting. If you click the 'Read more' button for it you will see what I mean. shadowhousecreations.blogspot.com/search?q=Masks

Lillias, I wasn't able to download these.....seems the links are no longer working. He was my introduction to using textures.....always so generous.

Hi Helen, Thought you might like to know that I have just downloaded several of the texture/mask sets without any problem. However I was not able to download the individual textures as you said ............ maybe you would like to try downloading the sets again
Thank you Lillias for the link and the extra info regarding the ‘Generator Kit. I shall enjoy playing with theses great sets. I have a couple of his masks from way back and agree with Helen that he is so generous.

I was able to download all these sets Helen. Splatter Mask Set 2 - if you go down to the bottom of all the steps he provides as to how he uses these masks and look carefully you will see a ‘Download Zipped Set here’ link. Click that and you should be good to go. Inked Clipping Masks Set – same idea – look at the bottom for the ‘Download Zipped File here’ link. For the Shadowhouse Creations Tint and Mask Generator Kit – click on the little ‘Read More’ link which opens it up and look for the ‘Download Zipped’ at the bottom.
The Black Box Set, Assorted Masks Overlays, Retro Color Masks download links are all available and working if you click on each ‘Read More’ link to get to it. As is the other Splatter Masks sets etc:
There are some individual layer masks which when you click Download it leads to a 404 not found page. All you do with those is click on the actual mask which brings it up in a screen of its own and you can right click and save the image.
I hope this helps.

Thanks for that link BillieJean to Shadow House Creations. I just downloaded Jerry's splatter mask set 2 as a zip file without any issues (Helen, you might want to try again). I agree with Helen that Jerry Jones (aka skeletalmess) is incredibly generous in what he gives to others. I have a collection of his textures that I downloaded awhile back, but from where I downloaded them I can't recall. I used mask 7 from his set No 2 along with an image from pixabay for this image.

WOW this is just beautiful Sydney. Jerry's masks are great and I agree that it is so generous of him to give of his work so freely.

In case I’ve misled anyone I think perhaps I need to clarify something.
The mask that Helen used where I said to remove the white –– Since clipping masks was the subject, my mind was running along how to use it as a ‘clipping mask’ and that’s why I said to delete the white from it and that works fine BUT in actual fact that type of mask is what’s called an ‘Overlay Mask’ and it’s meant as the name suggests to be layered on top of a photo and a Blend Mode applied.
So here is a few examples which I hope clears up any confusion I may have inadvertently caused.

Gremlins at work I suppose as today I was able to download a number of the mask sets.....still a few I couldn't but I'm fine with what I was able to download. My number of masks has grown significantly since the beginning on this thread! Tried two of the Shadowhouse masks on this photo that was on my desktop..... Splatter Mask October Mask
