Wondered about adding a new sky....nice job getting behind those lanterns. I was surprised how easy it was - just a little masking of the bridge was all it took.

Seeing the really wonderful submissions so far, I thought I have to have one more go at this. Like Tony and hmca, I also was thinking of changing the sky but it would have meant me creating a composite, so I went for trying to change the whole scene to night time. All edits are in ACR and PSE 14. 1. Darkened the scene by lowering the white point using the white point slider in Output Levels in a Levels Adjustment layer. 2.. Fine tuned the night tones of the scene by raising the grey point slider in the Levels Adjustment layer. 3. Used a Hue/Saturation Adjustment layer to change the colours of the lanterns to a yellowish colour and added a local outer glow using Layer Styles. 4. Used a Faux Finish brush (#65) to paint the initial light rays from the lanterns down to the bridge. 5. Used a combination of radial and guassian blurs to blur the light rays 6. Adjusted opacity on the various layers to make the scene at least semi realistic. 7. Using an Assorted Brush (#48) to paint different sized stars into the sky to give it a little depth

5. Comments are restricted to complimenting someone's edit or asking a question about their process. You are not to critique someone's submission. would you mind sharing exactly how you did it in On1? I see some of the new sky behind the lanterns as well, not just the bridge. I have On1 on trial atm (another 25 days left) and would be interested to see how you did it as I am sure other On1 users might be as well.

C'mon..........give it a go Clive. These types of challenges are way outside of my comfort zone as well. It's just a bit of fun and you might discover some new techniques or software features in the process

Although On1 treats skies as a texture, technically you are correct about the composite, Bailey. I would hate to exclude sky replacements from this challenge. I will have to think about adjusting the directions for the next challenge. Hope Tony will share how he did his replacement.

I will have to think about adjusting the directions for the next challenge. Hope Tony will share how he did his replacement. I did wonder about what constituted a composite but decided to try it anyway - especially as in this case the clouds did come as a texture in ON1. Doing it was very simple in ON1 2019. Open the image and under the Effects tab Pick Texture>More and I chose Dark Clouds and used that as is. If you want more choice there are more skies in Category>Natural and you can play with the Mode, Opacity, Brightness, Scale etc. I don't think I changed anything from the Dark Clouds preset I then just took the masking brush and with a large feathered brush at 100% Opacity I painted out the clouds on the bridge and below. After that you can add more filters or apply Effect Presets. Only thing to remember is to create a merged layer if you want to apply a preset or the preset will only apply to the underlying image and you'll lose the sky. I'm still learning ON1 so maybe there's another way to apply the preset and not lose the texture. Tony

Encouraged by Bailey. Not sure of this even counts. Opened in ACR a few times and messed with the clarity slider beefing up the DR, partial desaturation and adjust levels in dark hidy places etc. Also selectively desaturated in PSE 2018. Added some noise. Did crop it some as it seemed to need a slight crop. The whole process was rather random.

The whole process was rather random. That’s the way I’ve always treated these challenges ... play around at random and have some fun doing it. Looks like you’re off to a real good start! Tony

Thanks for the explanation, Tony. I need to become more familiar with the layer process in On1.
Glad you gave this a try, Clive. I agree with Tony about just experimenting and see what you come up with.....and in your case....a unique edit! Well done.

Hi Clive,
I am very happy to see you had a go and what a great first up result .
As I mentioned in my first post and in other threads, art and graphic design are not my strong points.
In my first submission in this challenge I basically covered my eyes and threw virtual darts at the PSE Filter Gallery to hopefully come up with something .

[offtopic] ... Doing it was very simple in ON1 2019. Open the image and under the Effects tab Pick Texture>More and I chose Dark Clouds and used that as is. If you want more choice there are more skies in Category>Natural and you can play with the Mode, Opacity, Brightness, Scale etc. I don't think I changed anything from the Dark Clouds preset ... In addition to hmca, thank you also for the explanation. I had a tinker in On1 PR 2019 with adding the same sky texture you did. It works but unfortunately I found that On1 overlays the sky texture over the entire image without trying to figure out which part of the image is actually sky. I then masked out the texture below the bridge as you did. For me, the downside of overlaying the the texture is that the colour tones of the bridge and light pole change a little after the texture is blended into them. Because the tone change is subtle, but still noticeable, it appears only the gaps in the bridge wall and light poles are filled with the new sky when actually the texture is applied to the whole image. Using Elements+, I split out the blue channel which then made it very easy to select (with only a few minor adjustments) just the sky proper and the sky in the gaps in the bridge wall and light pole frames using the Magic Wand Tool. It's then a fairly simple task to delete the selected part of the image and replace the sky with any other sky image I like. This would be my preferred option because it doesn't change the colour tones of the image elements adjacent to the sky. [/offtopic]
