Transform photos into watercolours with this Free Photo Action from the Adobe Create Magazine.
This is a Photoshop Action but I have been able to run it in PSE 15. Whether I have been able to obtain the full results that could be obtained in PS remains to be seen but I'm quite pleased with the results of my first attempt at using it – seen below. NOTE: (You do need a version of PSE that can cope with Groups)
It comes with a brush set and a set of Patterns as well as the Action and a PDF with instructions on how to use them. Videos are also provided to show how to run the action and customize the results.
When complete your Layers Panel will look something like below…Each coloured Group can be opened to access the layers within the Group and you can change things like opacity and blend modes or add things to your hearts content to get your watercolour image to look the way you want. It will take a bit of practice and application to find out what best to do but that's all part of the fun. The hard yards have been done for you to start with.

BillieJean,
Thanks for sharing this action! I really like the results. I am on my way to download it.
NOTE: (You do need a version of PSE that can cope with Groups)
Adobe introduced the Layer Group feature in PSE 15. Users of earlier versions will need an add-on such as Elements+ created by Andrei Doubrovski or the Group/Ungroup action created by dconsc, a longstanding member on the now-closed Elements Village forum. NOTE: dconsc's action is available for download on this forum.

Great watercolor of the lion. I tried the action with PSE14 and got numerous messages that certain commands (make, smooth, and others I don't remember) were not available. I like the watercolor brushes that came with the action and plan to use them. Thanks for sharing.

I tried the action with PSE14 and got numerous messages that certain commands (make, smooth, and others I don't remember) Yes I got some of them too but I just kept hitting continue. As usual I think it depends on the image you use and as I said this Action is really for the full PS so I suppose that has something to do with it but from what I've seen I can certainly still make use of it.

I ran this action in PSE 11 through PSE 2019. I got several "Command not currently available" messages. When running an action in Elements, you need to keep this in mind . . .
- Elements can use actions created in Photoshop provided they have been written specifically for Elements, i.e., if they use commands that this program "understands".
- If you run an action in Elements which this program doesn't "understand", you will get an error message. Can you ignore it and click on the Continue button? Definitely! But the final results may not be what you had in mind.

I had tried this once before and didn't like the results. I took my time and adjusted/changed blend modes on various layers. Also created a few composites along the way. At the end I took it into CE 4 and added a slight glow and a border. Added my favorite texture...sadly don't know where it's from. Thanks for giving me the incentive to try this again, Lillias!
