I've never used an Action but I am about to process about 100 photos from our recent holiday and I want to give each one a caption either at the bottom or the top. In the past I've added an extra inch or so of white space using Resize> Canvas Size and added my caption using the type tool.
I was wondering whether an Action exists which would at least automate the process of adding the extra space by just one click. If it could activate the type tool that would be a bonus.
As I've never used an Action I may have got completely the wrong impression of what they are capable of, I'm assuming they record a process which generally would be done manually.

ChrisAnn -
An action could certainly accomplish what you want. I'm not aware of any that exist for that purpose, however. The full Photoshop program is required to create an action.

Chris Ann,
I am not sure this will help but you may want to check this add-on -- Elements+ (created by Andrei Doubrovski ).
This add-on offers -- Batch -- designed to process multiple images automatically. (Check the video tutorial at the bottom of the page.)
Andrei is better qualified to handle this issue; I will bring this thread to his attention.

Thank you Major Major, Sepiana & Andrei - I don't have access to Photoshop and neither do I own Elements+ but will certainly look at those links as it may be something I should be looking into.

ChrisAnn, you are most welcome! If you decide to purchase Elements+, keep this in mind . . .
The price is right -- $12. I have this add-on; it is worth every penny. And the bonus? Five-star in-house Customer Service!

Hi Chris Ann,
I also have Elements+ and I can recommend the Macros feature for PSE users who would like to record editing/processing steps in a similar way to recording steps in a Photoshop action.
For anyone familiar with Javascript you can then edit the macros to customise them to also perform tasks that are not recordable within a PSE session.

ChrisAnn, you got it right. Check this out -- All About Actions.

Yes that is correct as sepiana mentioned. The good news for PSE users is that you can also record the same process using the Macros feature in Elements+. You can't record Actions in PSE. You can also customise recorded Macros if you are familiar with Javascript but you don't need to understand anything about Javascript to record and run Macros.

The only thing I don't like about the Macros feature is that the ScriptListener that runs in the background records all the recordable clicks you make in PSE session into a log file on your desktop unless you tutn it off when not needed.
Over time the log file will become very large depending on how much you use PSE. I simply periodically delete the log file and the ScriptListener simply creates a new one the next time you start PSE.
Just something to be wary of if using Macros.

Hi Chris Ann, Your thread has prompted me to do something I have been meaning to do for a little while now and that is build a script to extend the canvas on all the documents in the photo bin in one go. I finally got around to doing this today after seeing this thread. If you, or anyone for that matter, are interested in having a play with it, the script is in my Bailey's PSE Scripts thread. The instructions on how to copy/paste and run the script in your PSE, without the need for any 3rd party add-on, are in the OP of that thread.

Hi deany, Thank you for the link. I had a look at the tute and yes it is very useful. I don't add text directly onto images much but when I have to, I often need to find a location on the image and text colour which allow it to be readable. This technique certainly makes it easier

Wow! Bailey. That's great - such a help to me when trying to caption at least 100 photos. And so easy to use, even I understood what to do. Thanks so much.
Thanks also Deany for your contribution which I can see will come in useful when I'm sending family photos to other members of the family who may not be precisely sure as to which great niece or nephew they're of. An easily read caption but not hiding any of the photo. I'm busy making a newbook mark folder so that I can keep all these wonderful-time saving processes easily available for future use.
