I have been playing with the Smart Brush Tool and thought it would be fun to put this challenge up.
There are a number of different things that can be done using the Smart Brush but for this tutorial I am going to concentrate on using it to create a sketch effect. So let’s get started.
Open the photo you want to use and duplicate it. (It’s always better to work on a duplicate.)
Click on the Smart Brush Icon and look to the bottom of the screen to the tool options.
Click on the little down arrow at the side of the little Thumbnail and from the set of Artistic presets click on the one called Pencil Sketch.
On the duplicated image - Drag over the part of your image that you want to turn into a sketch.
As soon as you do that you will see a new layer (sketch and mask) created in the layers panel.
When you are happy with your sketch selection if you feel that the effect is a bit faint then either double click on the thumbnail of the sketch in the layers panel to select it and go to Enhance > Adjust Lighting > Levels and use the sliders to darken the effect OR duplicate the layer and give it a multiply blend mode before merging the two layers together.
If that’s all you want to do then you are finished but if you like you can try running through the different blend modes to see how you can add a bit of colour back into your sketch.
If you feel adventurous you can investigate other things to do with this effect.
For example you can take your new sketch effect and turn it into a line drawing by using the magic wand tool to select the white parts of the sketch and delete them.
Just experiment and have fun.

My first try, very poor, I know. I could not get the dark parts really dark, tried duplications, blend modes. What am I overlooking? Did I perhaps start out with a flower that was too dark to begin with. The center was light yellowish and was the only thing that came out dark.

I’m assuming, and please tell me if I’m wrong, that you just turned the centre part of the flower into the sketch effect – and if so it looks fine and dark enough to me Rita so you don't appear to have overlooked anything. |

Lillias, I painted over the entire flower, probably a dozen times, but after the first couple of times there was no further change.

I tried this and painted over the flower to get the sketch effect and then clicked on the thumbnail of the sketch in the layers tab and applied a levels adjustment and that's all I did. You can see the result below. What I don't understand looking at your first upload is how the whole photo appears to have a washed out look to it.

Thank you, Lillias, for taking the time for this. I will try it again. The washed out effect was probably produced by whatever I did wrong from the start and caused the problem in the first place. But I don't know what it was.
I'll try some other pic, too.
First I'm going to have lunch!
