I am wanting to make gift tags. How can I open a new file, A4 size, and divide it so that I can transfer images which will be identical shape and size? I used to have a card program, which also had tags. But I never used it, so got rid. Typical me!!! This is the idea. As you see, I am no artist.

whippet Will the actual tags be identical? i.e same patterns or images. Or will they all be slightly different except size?
Just a note ... if all of the tags are bit different in size, does it really matter? i.e. if the A4 is cut up into a dozen tags, who will know if one tag is a fraction of an inch wider then the next tag? You will know, but not recipients, eh?

I am doing these to raise funds for the greyhound rescue I support. I was thinking of several different images, and bundles of about 10 tags. That was why I wanted the same size.
I had a thought after I opened this thread.
If I did A4 size, and flood filled it with a colour. Then opened a new file - eg 4"x2" and put it as a layer, (leaving it white), and kept doing that till the background layer is full. That should work - shouldn't it?

Whippet, if you set this up with space around every tag, as you show, you would have to do a great deal of cutting out. I once did something like that as thank you notes, but much simpler. Perhaps it can give you an idea.

Solid background. Can be solid color or patterned/decorated.
Design and place a grid on a separate layer.
Now place images and text in each square using grid to designate each individual tag.
Delete grid layer.
Without a grid, where you would need to be precise in your trimming, having a solid background would allow you to be less precise when cutting out your tags.
You can approach the page design in two ways. One page of all the same design - where you make 10 different design pages — or one page with 10 different designs where you print multiple copies of the page.
I’d probably go for the 10 different tags on one page. Otherwise you would be doing a lot of copy pasting to make each page with 10 identical designs.
I’d keep them rectangular for ease of cutting. And if you don’t own a trimmer, you can buy a cheap one at a craft store.

Janice, I used no grid of any kind. Ctrl-J to duplicate and MoveTool>hold Shift> Down Arrow Key (left Arrow Key for layer 2) And I left thin Spaces between tags on purpose to guide a paper cutter (I hope whippet has a paper cutter, otherwise this would be the time to invest in one )

Just a thought - does your printer print right up to the edge of the paper? If not you need to allow for trimming off the white edge if the background is coloured. I know my current printer has a huge non-printing area - definitely not buying the same make when it eventually gives up.

That's what I did . . . I used the Color Shape tool to draw a grid (Color Shape>Tiles>Grid). You can use any color you want. When you print your file, the grid will be visible. You can, then, use it to guide the paper cutter.

Yes, Sepiana, that would work as well. As long as there is a clear guide for the cutter, at least for my cheap little one it's necessary.

If you leave a different color between your tags, you will need to be precise so the amount of edging around each tag is even. With a solid color, you will have leeway in just how carefully you cut your tags. You use the rulers on the trimmer to determine where you trim - you will not need printed guidelines to determine where to cut.

Janice, you must have a better paper cutter than I do. I always wish I had three hands to keep the paper in place and straight.

I didn't have to design a grid; Elements did it. Also, it lent a helping hand to my paper cutter (a cheap one). We gave whippet great suggestions; she can pick up the one she feels more comfortable with.

I find the cheaper cutters work ok if you don’t expect too much from them. They claim you can do multiple pages at one time, but I just do 3 or 4 - sometimes only 2 - at a time. It is tedious without the right equipment. But who’s going to buy an expensive trimmer for a single project?

Here is another one -- using Guides. Not exactly what you want but it may help. Using Guides to Size Images for Gift Tags

That was a good video. I like the idea of guides as an alternative to making a grid. The video also reminded me to punch a hole in my gift tag so a ribbon can be attached.
