When the forum was young I thought the “Like” button was a good way to cover a multitude of things, that at that time I thought were important, so I have been “liking” almost everything. I used the “like” button to show my appreciation of member participation as well as to indicate things I thought were inspiring, well done, or showed progress. And so I continued down this path until now.
I have now come to a cross-road where I want to change direction. I no longer want to use the “Like” button. My goal is to be more selective and make an effort to comment on posts that I might like, are inspired by, or agree or disagree with. I imagine this is going to be a hard habit to break. Because I am here daily, and make an effort to participate in many areas, I wanted to be upfront about this change in my behavior.

Let me the first to like this post . I’m pretty erratic when it comes to liking - it’s often more a question of how I feel at the time so I can’t say I’m a big fan of liking and encouraging posts are certainly better. Interested to see other opinions as well as following Helen’s experiment (although it’s always been nice to be liked by Helen!) Tony

I think it is OK to "like" and respond to a post!
I also am ambivalent about the LIKE button, although I an not indiscriminate in its use. If I LIKE something I do mean it, but on the other hand I feel more lazy about posting a "real" response.

Thanks, Tony. I appreciate your comment.
Yes, you've been very good about how you use it, Tom. I can see where both would work for you. For me it would be a slippery slope if I really intend to make the change. I'm afraid that I would fall back into my old habits.

I'm generally using the like button as an acknowledgement of a comment, or a simple that's nice to an image posted.

I too, wish there were alternatives.
I sometimes do not actually personally 'like' a picture, but do appreciate the effort and talent, which has gone into a creation.

When I "like" a post, it means I appreciate or agree with the comment or I like the image or the effort shown. It is easier to "like" a post (comment, image) than to comment on everything when my comment would simply be "I like/appreciate that."

I think a big "Thank You" button would be nice.

When I like, I really like, although it does not say why I like because I like to like for so many different reasons, while if I do not like, it does not mean that I do not like because most of the time I do not like even if I like and even if I know we all like to be liked.
One thing is for sure. I like this forum and its people.

Interesting to read the comments that have been shared. What's important is that we are all comfortable with the way we want to use it.
Maurice, like the others have commented, I appreciate your "makes me smile" comment. And yes, I am having a hard time sticking to my plan for myself. But as time goes by, I think I will find it easier.
