I do not understand why I need to do the selection using the marquee tool of where I want to block the information in the image BEFORE doing the Ctrl-J Why can't I do Ctrl-J first THEN do the marquee selection? Elements offers more than one way to accomplish something. Placing the selection on its own layer gives you more editing flexibility. If that's not important, just do it the way you describe. Then, Elements will duplicate the background layer and you make the selection and fill it with color in this duplicate layer. Charles, It was getting late last night and I didn't write detailed steps. If you want to do it this way, . . . 1. Set the Foreground color to the gray shade of your choice -- R = 169, G = 169, B =169. 2. Duplicate the background layer (Ctrl-J). Draw your rectangle with the Rectangular Marquee tool. 3. Edit>Fill Selection (Alt-Backskpace). Select>Deselect (Ctrl-D). 4. Merge your layers (Ctrl-E). |

In addition to covering the unwanted data with colored blocks, you can also blur the unwanted info....I'd probably lean to the blur method. Use the rectangular marquee tool to select the areas to be blurred and the use >> Filter >> >Blur >> Gaussian blur Click images to see full size.  You can select several rectangles all at once...after you select one rectangle, hold shift key to do another rectangle ... and another. And then when you apply the blur, all rectangles selected will be blurred.  |

As ever with PSE there is more than one way of doing things. I hope I’m not stepping on any ones toes here as I realise a lot of good advice has already been given but another way to approach this would be as follows... First via the colour picker choose the colour you want as per the instructions provided earlier in this post then click on the Custom Shape Tool. Along the bottom of your screen you will see the Shape Tool Choices - click on the Rectangle Shape. With that Shape chosen go to your document and click and drag across the part of your page that you wish hidden. Let go your mouse and voila it should be done. Billiejean, Thank you so much for this idea! Using the rectangular shape tool is perfect being so much easier than worrying about the dang marching ants! Again Thank you! |

I have been having a lot of things running thru my head on this problem, #1 not seeing the marching ants. I think I may have that problem figured out. It looks to me like Adobe "changed" the marching ants in Elements 2021, and in my humble opinion I do not like it. They are not as prominent as they used to be, now being much smaller, not as vivid as they used to be and a different shape than they used to be. Am I correct on this? When I first draw my shape using the Marquee tool, there are tiny straight lines already marching around the shape, and that same marching ants line later becomes the marching ants.... at least on my computer setup they do. I was able to add the blocking to my Excel file like I wanted to. Originally this is a financial file that all that information is private, that is why I wanted to block everything just showing the outside lines basically. Has anyone else complained about the marching ants in 2021??  |

They are very difficult to see. However, I assume programmers are younger with better eyesight than mine, so things like being able to easily see something never enters their mind

I will pay a visit to the Adobe Photoshop Elements forum to see if there have been any. I will keep you posted.
