I have done this many many times before, but today I can't remember what I am forgetting to do. I am still working on this same project. I want to cover the red letters with the white background in the cell above but I must be forgetting a step. I take my Marquee tool and draw a rectangle in the white cell ABOVE the "Red are my Credit Cards" and I want to drag that area of white to cover the words. I know at some point I need to use the MOVE tool to move the selection down.... please what am I forgetting?

Place your cursor on one of those little "square handles". The cursor will turn into a double-headed arrow. 3. Drag out the selection edge until the selection completely covers the area you want to hide. NOTE: There is no need to use the Move tool. Free Transform is a separate command.

I have heard a million times there is more than one way to do something in Elements. Using Free Transform is something totally new to me as I have never used Free Transform before. Something I do in what I said above and what you are telling me to is missing. When I press CTRL-T nothing happens. If I go to Image>Transform Free Transform then THAT is greyed out not available to me to use. Is Free Transform done AFTER I make my selection using the Marquee tool? That is what I tried doing that did not work. Using your instructions what do I need to do BEFORE using Free Transform? How do I use Ctrl-T to move the white area to cover the text I want covered up? One more thing, in the past I clearly remember using the Move Tool to slide the selected white (or what ever) area from using the Marquee tool to cover what I want covered up.

Is Free Transform done AFTER I make my selection using the Marquee tool? 1. Make your selection. 2. Keep your selection activated (marching ants visible). DO NOT DESELECT IT! 3. Do Free Transform.

I have done that. Selection with marching ants. Go to Image>Transform that is as far as I can go. The marching ants ARE still there. The Free Transform after going to Transform is not there. You need to click on Free Transform to invoke this command (or just use the shortcut -- Ctrl-T). Once you do this, you should see the following . . . - a transform border (solid line) around the selection. - 8 square handles (on the corners and halfway on the sides) - the Commit (green) and the Cancel (red) button.Just place your cursor on one of the handles and drag the selection edge out. When you are done, press the Commit button to apply the transformation.

How can I click on Free Transform when I tell you it is not there? A picture is worth a thousand words. When I do a Ctrl-T nothing happens. You can see my Marquee selection, and yes it does have the marching ants.

I just did a little more checking. I had 6 layers on this and individually turned them on and off to see what they did. With all (except main) layers turned off, everything visible I went and checked each layer turning it on then off to check the next layer on and off to see what it did. One of the layers did hide the words "Red are my credit cards" - Great! but when I turned on the layer that has the gaussian blurr in it, then the layer that hid the words now became visible. So I had to erase the layer that hid the words.
Now when I try Ctrl-T it DOES work. However I cannot figure out how to make Ctrl-T to do anything. So I thought, well I will go back and use the blurr on the words. That does not work now either!! DANG IT!

A picture is worth a thousand words. When I do a Ctrl-T nothing happens. Charles, thanks! The screen shot is very helpful. This is weird! The Transform menu is missing the submenus! Let's see if we can get them back. Run Elements as administrator:1. Right-click on the desktop shortcut. 2. Select "Run as administrator".3. Check to see if the submenus are back and the Free Transform command is working. 4. Close Elements. 5. Open Elements but now do it as a regular user. If the above doesn't fix the problem, try this . . .Delete/Restore the Preferences file:1. Go to Edit>Preferences>General. 2. Click on the "Reset Preferences on next launch" button. 3. Ignore the "This cannot be undone." warning and click OK. 4. Close Elements and then start it again.

Charles, watching this thread and reading your post above, it might be a good idea to post a screenshot of your layers. Sepiana could then see if the problem might be in your layer order, or the layer you are on when you are trying to use the transform tool.

Here is a screen shot of my layers. When I was having my main problem above I had 6 layers I am down to 3 now as one of those layers was causing my problem as i talked about in my last post. I really do not think THIS screen shot is going to be any help, but here it is:

It is hard to see any difference in the layers above. Where are you in the process? What would you like to do next?
