Inspeqtor, thanks for sharing this post. I always look forward to seeing your moon photos which are very impressive.
Your friend did a very good job sharpening your moon photo. However its not the only way to to sharpen effectively. I am not sure if he used one filter on top of the other, starting from the bottom and going up. It will be impossible to reproduce his processing without knowing the settings for each individual programme. Sharpening is a double edged sword. If you over-sharpen, the image will not look so good, especially if you pixel peep. Sharpening is also relative to the resolution it will be viewed. Sharpening is usually more extreme before printing an image because its not intended for pixel-peeping.
Here is what your friend used. Without knowing the settings it's impossible to reproduce the results.
5- Topaz Sharpen AI/Topaz Denoise AI 4- Topaz Adjust (This is the older version of Adjust which is no longer available and has been replaced by Topaz Adjust AI) 3- Topaz detail (This is the older version of Topaz sharpening which was replaced by Topaz Sharpen AI which is much better) 2- Nik Filters Colour Effects pro 4 to remove colour cast - This is entirely optional 1- Nil Filters Colour Effects pro 4 detail extractor. 0- Original Image
Foto Frank also did an excellent job.
Frank, Thank you very much for the action which I will download and try.
Inspeqtor, FotoFranks method will give much more reproducable results.
You can easily change the density (brightness) using a levels adjustment to change the black point and grey point according to taste.
If you want to remove all the colour from the image you can use a gradient map layer
If you want a warm coloured moon, in PS Elements go to Enhance/Adjust Colour/Remove colour cast and use the eye dropper and click on the sky in your original picture.
If you want a cool coloured moon, in PS Elements go to Enhance/Adjust Colour/Remove colour cast and use the eye dropper and click on the moon.
Kind regards Chris

Charles, a number of members have stepped in and answered your questions. I created the Sharpening Action to simplify the process as this is a little complicated. This way you don't have to remember what the steps are you just let the action run. I used the JPG from your original post I removed the color - Ctrl/CMD+Shift+u Next run the action and adjust the sliders - season to taste Add a Brightness and contrast to finish

3- Topaz detail (This is the older version of Topaz sharpening which was replaced by Topaz Sharpen AI which is much better) Chris, I also have Topaz Detail. I always thought that it had been replaced by Topaz Adjust AI. So, I did some checking. According to Topaz Labs, . . . Source: Legacy Products

Sepiana, It has been years since I worked with a zip file. I used to own WinZip but I no longer have that. When I double click on the Sharpen ZIP file it then opens to the Sharpen ATN file (NOT Fotofrank Sharpen), but the atn file has not yet been extracted from the zip file. If I double click on the atn file it now automatically brings up Elements, but it does not LOAD the file into elements. Going to Windows> Action it "finds" Fotofrank Sharpen. When I then bring up the 4 lined square and click on Load Action, now it does not know where to FIND the Fotofrank Sharpen file when a new Window comes up to find and load Fotofrank Sharpen. Why does the file inside the Zip file say Sharpen, but yet Elements says "Fotofrank Sharpen"?

Charles all actions are part of an action SET. The action SET is called sharpen, the actual action is FotoFrank Sharpen. Just click on the play button (next to the trash can )to run the action.

Charles, use the built-in extractor in Windows. 1. Right-click on the zip file. 2. Select "Extract All". 3. Then, follow the instructions.

Sepiana, Thank you, got the zip file extracted and saved, and loaded into Windoze (woops, Windows) Now questions for Frank and/or Sepiana, plus anyone else that might have my answers. A question I asked Sepiana but am still curious for an answer, how did Elements come up with the name FotoFrank Sharpen, with that NAME SHOWING in the Windows Action drop down window? Now I find I have FotoFrank Sharpen ACTION loaded 2 times in Elements! How did I get that to happen? Is there a way to ERASE one of them from Elements? I ran Frank's action several times on my original file, but I NEVER saw any change made at all to my file!!! I of course never saved the work, using the same original file over and over. At first I started the file from the copy of the background using CTRL-J, but later I stopped doing CTRL-J and ran from the original background.

Click on the four-lined square in the upper right corner of the Actions panel. 3. Select "Delete".

Does anyone have any idea as to why when I run the action no change is made to my original photo? Chris, PLEASE let me know if when you try this action if you have any problems with it not working....or if it does work for you let me also know that also! Thank you everyone!

Sepiana, thanks for pointing out that Topaz detail was replaced by Topaz Adjust AI. There is a detail slider adjustment panel within Adjust AI. I was getting Topaz InFocus confused with Topaz Detail.
Charles, in newer versions of elements, When you click on the atn file, Elements will open and automatically and load the action in the actions panel. So that's why you probably ended up with two versions. The action will be available unless you change the location. For convenience, I have made a folder "Actions Extra" in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 2020\Presets\Actions Extra. I have put all my extra actions there.
I have tried running FotoFranks Sharpening action in PSE 2020 and got some errors saying that some commands were not available in Elements. So it appears this action will only work with the full Photoshop. However, I will study Frank's layer screenshot and try to work out how to do it manually. It appears to be a very effective technique.
Kind regards Chris

This action was recorded to be run in Elements, i.e, with commands that this program "understands".

I did Delete both versions of Fotofranks action, then I went back and reloaded the action then re-ran the action. It still does not work for me.
Chris says he has problems with it, Sepiana works flawlessly. I wish I knew how to record a video on my computer then be able to show the video here, but that last part I do not know how to do.
I am running Photoshop Elements 2021

Update. I ran the action today and got it to work. I don't know if the computer restart helped. I think the problem yesterday was that I did not run the action on the original Background layer but ran it on a normal layer.
I am trying to work out how to do the procedure manually step by step on a combined layer (not the original background). I will report back.
Kind regards Chris
Update: I have succeeded using the technique manually step by step. Thanks again FotoFrank for sharing this with us.

Chris, I believe that was the root of the problem; actions are designed to be run on a Background layer. The first step Frank recorded was this "warning".

I just ran the program again, taking a screen shot when I first start the program, changing the radius value to 5 and Threshold to 15 then taking another screen shot when the program is finished. I want you to see what I see. Does this help? Do you see any difference in the Moon at all?
