Chris,
How do you manually go thru the program step by step?

just ran the program again, . . . changing the radius value to 5 and Threshold to 15. Do you see any difference in the Moon at all? Charles, I don't see any difference. This may explain why . . . You used the default setting for the Surface Blur filter. When you run this action, you will see this message. Try following Frank's advice and adjusting those sliders accordingly.

I just ran the program again, taking a screen shot when I first start the program, changing the radius value to 5 and Threshold to 15 then taking another screen shot when the program is finished. I want you to see what I see. Does this help? Do you see any difference in the Moon at all? Yes, on my computer I can see the second image has been sharpened. As Sepiana has mentioned, and according to the action, you can adjust the surface blur to improve the sharpening as much as you like. TIP: Make sure the picture in the main PSE Edit window is quite large to begin with. Then, it will be easier to see the sharpening as you adjust the sliders Kind regards Chris

This time I changed both values to 30 when running the program. I do see a better difference in the color now. Maybe a slight bit more sharpness. Is there a chance of getting any more detail in the craters, or is this the best I can expect to get?

Is there a chance of getting any more detail in the craters, or is this the best I can expect to get? Charles, you could try changing the values again. The other possibility is to click on the top group and use Control +Alt+Shift+ E to create a combined layer on top. Then run Topaz sharpen AI or an unsharp mask filter. If it looks over sharpened you can dial down the transparency. You want the sharpening and details to look natural. I had another look at your friends first image. It has a lot of sharpening artifacts which give the illusion of texture and sharpness. It also has the local contrast increased like a clarity adjustment which also gives the illusion of sharpness. If you prefer that look, you can increase the local contrast using the unsharp mask with a high radius of between 75-250 according to taste. Or try a levels or brightness contrast adjustment to see if that helps. Kind regards Chris

Charles, Using PSE with Elements+ I'm able to duplicate the results I normally use with On1. If I have your permission I'll apply them to your original image and post results with settings

Chris,
What do you mean by "click on the top group and use CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+ E"?

Chris, What do you mean by "click on the top group and use CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+ E"? Charles, this procedure involves pressing the four keys (CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+ E,) at the same time. When you click on the top of a layer stack and use CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+ E, a new layer is generated on top that is combined from all the layers below. It's a useful procedure to know. I use this method all the time. The advantage is that you will not lose the previous work you have done. You can then proceed to further edit the combined layer. In this case to try and do some more sharpening if you wish. Kind regards Chris

Thanks. I'm using PSE 21 and have Elements+ installed. FYI Elements+ expands PSE to include many of the capabilities of full Photoshop.
Results obtained using menu option Open in Camera Raw.
Results using Elements+ menu Automation tools>Raw corrections
