BuckSkin The Runt was the last owlet to poke its head above the nest. Four is the max brood size, so the mother probably laid just three eggs. The Runt just hatched a few days later. After the two siblings fledged, at least once, one of them flew back to the nest for a "visit." Here they are on May 8. The Runt is considerably smaller.

That is an awesome photo of your runt - although, maybe, a little scary...

The Runt is considerably smaller. I figured it out = two males and a female.

I figured it out = two males and a female. Ah, tis not so. See here.... the female Great Horned Owl is considerably larger than the male, averaging about 2 kg to the male’s 1 to 1.5 kg,Although owls are technically not raptors, a lot of raptors females are larger than the males. Here. I think The Runt was was just a late hatcher. Fun stuff.

Thanks, Clive. I'm having fun with this. I got brave and asked the guy in the first shot for permission as I had to move to the table behind him to get the shot.....the other was my usual sneak capture.

Thought I'd see if I could catch an oriole at the oriole nectar feeder today but they were too busy building nests or I wasn't quick enough - but several other birds did come to sip the nectar. Interesting to compare the hummingbird with it's long beak well designed for dipping into the feeder and the downy woodpecker with a short beak that has to stick her head right in to get a sip. Tony

Thanks, Howard. Interesting, as my original idea was to capture them from behind....may have to rethink that. tonyw.......nice comparison and the color pop rivals firefly to my eye.

At a local criterium. I need to practice in order to capture the speed and motion involved.
