I'm posting this early as I'm going to be off-line for a few days. I know that we've had lots of different sketch effects but I am quite fond of them and I ran across this recent PSE video from davrodigital for creating a pencil sketch that I found a bit different from the standard approach. www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlPQ-Q3qvZ8&ab_channel=davrodigitalThe first 6 minutes or so deals with creating the pencil sketch and after that you are free to do whatever you want with it. What I liked about the method was the use of Motion Blur instead of the normal Gaussian Blur (you could also try other blurs) and the use of a brush on a Soft Light layer to darken or lighten areas of the sketch. Here's a summary of the pencil sketch creation: Duplicate the Background Convert to B&W (Desaturate or Ctrl-Shift-U) Duplicate the B&W layer Invert it (Ctrl-I) and set the Blend Mode to Color Dodge Filter>Blur>Motion Blur (Set Distance and Angle for the best effect) Add a new layer and merge visible Add a new layer and set the Blend Mode to Soft Light With a soft edge brush and reduced opacity paint with black to darken and white to lighten sketch areas. Add a levels adjustment layer and tweak to finish off the pencil sketch. In the example below I then set the pencil sketch to overlay blend mode over the original to add colour to the sketch (and did a sky replacement) but play around doing whatever you want and looking forward to seeing what you come up with. Tony

Note in Elements that in order to desaturate you have to move the slider. Cntrl-U just brings up the dialog box. I wrote an action for these steps so tonyw if you are ok it can get posted.

My mistake - the shortcut to desaturate is Ctrl-Shift-U in both Photoshop Elements and Photoshop. I'll edit my post. Thanks for pointing that out.

It took me awhile when I first started using PE to like the look of a sketch effect although everyone else seemed to love them. Over the years, I've come to appreciate them and am always interested in trying a new one. I think this is the first one (or the first one that I remember) where the motion blur filter is used and I liked watching how it affected the sketch. At the end I used the poster edge filter....an old EV tip that I've always liked to try at the end of a sketch effect.

BG watercolour paper from Digital Scrapper, Image from Pixabay. After creating the pencil sketch I placed it on top of a copy of the original and used the overlay blend mode. I created a stamped layer and placed a black layer mask on that and used brushes to brush back the parts of the image I wanted

When I read this, it got me thinking that this technique would be very helpful when trying to produce images like those of Gerry Blanshard. Instead of trying to produce geometric shapes in your images, you could start with this sketch effect. photoshopelementsandmore.com/post/74713/thread

If you give it a try, I hope you'll share your results, Pat.

Hi Tony I also like the sketch effect and whenever I find a new sketch tutorial, I need to try it. On this sketch I did some D&B, some smudging, and added a gradient background. This image is one of my own.
