Pardon me if I shouldn't post my question here - I may be out of place. If so, I'd appreciate some suggestions for some other website. Thank you!
-> I Start with two files on the screen, side by side. -> the one on the left is a photo -> on the right is an empty frame in the dimensions of 5x7 or 4x6. -> I want to drag the photo from the left to the frame. The photo is flexible to fit the frame but is not an exact fit. -> Save the result.
The empty frames are tamper-proof, their sizes cannot be changed. The photo fits the frame best it can. At the bottom, a small percentage of the height is marked off with a light blue line to allow for a caption..
Would appreciate some help in repeating my procedure from a few years ago. It was so easy, then! What is the word for that frame? Easel? Frame? The name was borrowed from the art world.

Hi Paul, glad to see you back here.
Would you please give us some more information on these frame files? I'm curious about the fact that their size cannot be changed. I work with frames a lot; their size can usually be changed to the size of the photo(s).
Also, which is the file format of these frames? PSD, PNG, etc?
Can you post a screenshot of the Elements workspace with a photo and a frame displayed side by side?

Hello Sepiana! I was hoping you'd be signing in! I looked at one of those templates (that's a better word), I chose 6x4 and it's 300 ppi - and btw it's a jpg. All I could see was a blank solid white rectangle. I was using FastStone, and I did try to capture the file info on it but it was very elusive. It did mention PSE however, so it's official! I'm afraid that doesn't tell you much, but I'll keep playing with it. Oh, and I don't know where I got the notion it was non-right protected.
And I'll work on a screen shot, may not be today. It's going to be 17 below (F) tomorrow so I may be a while

Let's see what we can do with this information. Taking into consideration the kind of template you will be working with -- solid white rectangle - JPG format, . . . let's start with these two possibilities. 1. Open the template in Elements. 2. Do File > Place to bring your photo into Elements. 3. Use Free Transform (Ctrl-T) to reposition/resize it to fit the template. NOTE:When you use the File > Place command, the file will come in as a Smart Object. For the advantages and disadvantages of using this technique, see . . . All About Smart Objects. OR1. Create a new blank file with the same dimensions and resolution as your photo. 2. Fill it with White. 3. Do File > Place to bring your photo into Elements. NOTE:As your photo and the template you created have the same dimensions and resolution, your photo will fit the template.

I seem to have trouble with words lately.
When I said "solid" unfortunately it was taken to mean physically solid. Actually it's an empty space. When I drag my photo into that space it probably won't fit. I would place my cursor on a corner of the photo and move it around so it fits as close as it's going to get. I didn't need to use a Ctrl-T. So Sepiana's first suggestion should work once I get it there. So my next challenges are 1) to put the photo in a position where I can fetch it and 2) place a light blue line at the bottom so's to allow room for a caption.
A foot of snow last night, driveway is keeping us locked in. We're at 8 below now and due for 17 below tonight. I say these to explain my slow responses. I'm also slow because I'll have to ask you to help with some pretty basic stuff. Like I was using FastStone, a free utility I use for simple tasks such as drag and drop - but I do end up in PSE. I'll have to use PSE earlier on. Bear with me!

PS: I have a dual monitor setup. Should make things easier.

I think where I'm stuck is in just one or two issues:
I need to get the kinks out of moving (?) or copying (?) photos from where they are stored now to a new place with an area for captions. One kink is to stop using FastStone and start using PSE. I believe I have another kink but it escapes me for the moment.
It turns out that my templates, four of them, already have the blue line which discerns an area for a caption. The line is not visible when handling it with FasStone, but you can see the line when they're handled with PSE (and some others).

PS: Why not ask my "kink" question here? Which is, I can move a photo from one spot to another but I lose the photo where it came from. How can I move the photo, with my mouse, and yet keep a copy where it came from?

Paul, I'm not sure this answers your question. Do a Copy/Paste job (Ctrl-C/Ctrl-V).

Sometimes when you drag from one item to another, it falls off the original page. It’s still there, but you don’t see it on the original canvas because you dragged it off the edge. Look to the layers panel, choose the photo layer and hit Control T (transform). Note where the outline is - it’s probably off the page. In essence, you are actually not completing the drag from the original to the new canvas.
Sepiana’s suggestion about using copy/paste might be a better option for you

Paul: If you are manually moving ... with a PC, as you are dragging the image from one folder to another, hit <ctrl> and you will see a + sign by the "move image icon" meaning the image you are moving will remain in the original folder and a copy will be placed in the destination folder. Good ideas everyone, thanks. Before these were posted, I had some success thanks to Dr. Google. I moved the file (using left button on my mouse) from the mother folder and placed it in the destination folder. But the mother folder was empty! Luckily I was able to rescue it.
If the right button is used, when the destination is reached you have a choice, either a) move file à la left button or b) leave a copy of the file in both folders. That's the choice I would choose. I'm reluctant to do any experimenting, these are family images from the turn of the (previous) century.
Anyone "right mousers" out there?

With a Mac, use the Option keyThis method works for so many things - - on a project, it will duplicate a layer - in the layers panel, it will duplicate a layer - in the layers panel, if you grab the fx icon, it will duplicate a layer style and move it to wherever you drop it in the layers panel

Paul, you don't want to do this. As you found out, it won't copy the file to another folder. It will move it out of the original folder. If the right button is used, when the destination is reached . . . you leave a copy of the file in both folders. I'm reluctant to do any experimenting, these are family images from the turn of the (previous) century. Anyone "right mousers" out there? I'm a "right mouser". Be assured; it works. This is what I do . . . - Right-click on the file. Select "Copy" from the pop-out menu. - Right-click on the destination folder. Select "Paste" from the pop-out menu. PS: Just read Clive's post... I think he's got it. I'm quite familiar with the technique Clive suggested. I can confirm it works.
