I like your take on this, Karen. Instead of trying to tame the bright areas of the photo you made them work for you. It now has a somewhat mystical/magical feel.

I used my final edit to create a "painted" look. I began with Topaz Simplify Buzz Sim 2 and layered the result over the original using the Multiply blend mode at 50% opacity. I then added the oil paint filter in PSCC.

No one has tried a panorama yet so I'll have to post one! I did finally manage to get those distant mountains to show (I fiddled around in Color Efex and I think it was a Polarization setting that had the biggest effect.) Not sure what else I did (although I do remember replacing the sky at some stage) but did finish up with a very noisy image and used Topaz Denoise to fix it but as a result it's rather over denoised. Certainly a perfect image for fiddling around with! Tony

I think this image lends itself well to a pano, Tony. Glad you didn't give up on the mountain detail. Certainly a perfect image for fiddling around with! Agree!

Just wanted to let the contributors to this thread know that the photographer's picks will be posted on Monday. That being said there is still time for some latecomers to give this a try today or tomorrow interested. A new challenge will be posted on Saturday.

Thanks to everyone who participated in editing this difficult to work with image. I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of creative approaches used. It was hard to single out just three for special mention, but here we go (in no particular order): Helen's persistence paid off with her final "painted look" edit that captured a nice balance of the receding background mountains in muted tones and colors that did not overwhelm the brighter and more colorful foreground island village. I liked Tonyw's first crop since it clearly draws the viewer's attention to the island and it's two main buildings, while keeping a sufficient amount of background mountains within the crop frame to provide environmental context. Of BillieJean's creative edits I am most fond of her minimalist sketch interpretation. Her interesting technique and tastefully applied use of masks and brushes at various opacities produced a visually pleasing result which still captured the essence of my original photo. Thanks again to all you folks for taking up the challenge, and special thanks to Helen for inviting me to submit an image for your editing consideration.

This was indeed a challenging image Pete. Thank you for the challenge. It’s always good to see how others approach challenges like this and to learn what the challenger thought of our efforts at the end of the day. Congrats Tony and Helen for your selected images too.

Thanks Pete for picking this image to work on as it was a real challenge. It was impressive to see what different people were able to create from it. Congratulations to all who worked on it, to Helen and Lillias for having their creations selected and Pete for his explanations of what he liked about his selections.
Tony
