For those that don't like video tutorials I have written out the basic steps (though they do not exactly match the video). I recommend viewing the video at least once just to see what he is getting at.
- Duplicate your image (Ctrl-J) and then turn off the Background layer (click the "eye" on the layer)
- Make the image square: select the Crop Tool (C) and choose 5x5 (Note: the video uses a different method to do this)
- Duplicate the layer (Ctrl-J) and rotate it 180 degrees (Image | Rotate | Rotate Layer 180 degrees)
- Choose a blend mode that works well for your image (one from the lighten group or one from the darken group)
- Merge the two layers (right-click the top layer and choose Merge Layer, or Ctrl-E)
- Duplicate the merged layers (Ctrl-J) and rotate it 60 degrees (Image | Rotate | Free Rotate Layer)
- Choose a blend mode from the group you didn't use the first time (but really, choose the one that pleases you most)
- Duplicate the rotated layer and rotate it another 60 degrees, which should give you an image with 6-fold symmetry
- Merge all the layers: Ctrl-Shift-Alt-E
- You can now tweak your image to increase the vibrancy and contrast using adjustment layers (Levels, Hue/Saturation, etc)
- Crop the image to your liking
Variation ideas: Instead of rotate 180 degrees, flip layer vertical, merge, duplicate, flip horizontal
Instead of two rotations of 60 degrees, rotate by 90 degrees and 45 degrees to get an eight-fold symmetry After step 9, Choose Image | Resize | Reveal All, add a layer below and fill with a solid color, use effects such as a drop-shadow or bevel I'm looking forward to seeing what Creative Effects you come up with!

| flip horizontal & vertical then 60 degree rotations

| Added solid background layer & drop shadow

These are gorgeous, Tom! Should be a fun challenge. Thank you very much for your kind words Helen! There were quite a few throw-always before these came into being, however. Because the basic tut is easy though, it wasn’t too frustrating to keep trying.

Well here's my first try. I like the way the center came out....I ended up flipping horizontal at the very end. Starter Image

Not real thrilled about mine but it's the first time I've ever tried this
I'm sorry you are disappointed Jim, but I understand, as several of mine had to just go on the trash heap. I found the starter image is crucial, as are the choices along the way. FWIW, I got more pleasing results using a PNG file, putting a solid color layer behind it all.

I like the center too! It certainly was an unexpected metallic effect.

In the past, I would always revert to an action. It's taken me a few tries with different images to get the one I originally posted and the one I am now adding. I followed the tut but then kept turning and merging layers, trying different blend modes and then merging and adjusting color brightness etc. I also had to extend the canvas size as my corners got cut off. Lots of experimenting. At the end I took them into CE 4. For this one I used the high key, skylight and pro contrast filters. Screenshot of the section of the image that I used....wasn't sure if it would work but using the difference blend mode somewhere along the line made it come together.

After looking at my entry again, I think the interest is in the center so I am adding an edited version.

I've lost count of the ones I've thrown away trying to do this. At last I have something I'm willing to post. Image from Unsplash.

I've lost count of the ones I've thrown away trying to do this. At last I have something I'm willing to post. That has been my experience too Lillias . Here is a tip you might wish to try: I have found much better success if I make a very basic twirl and then apply this technique.

I actually like that a lot, Lillias. It almost looks like heart shapes around the center and I like the "swirlies" at the edges caused by his hair.
