My father took these images in 1960. He was a conductor on the New York Central Freight trains, conductor meant he was the boss of the train. He took pictures using a 120MM film camera (no I do not know what camera it was sadly) of a wreck on June 3, 1960 of a train wreck. These were slide format which I took to a local camera store to have these scanned. On the cardboard frame of the slides my father thankfully wrote descriptions of most all slides (15 total, 13 he wrote on) The store needed to remove the card board or the file would not fit in the scanner, but the person doing the scanning did write on each file name of each picture what my father wrote!! This one is Elkhart (Indiana) Wrecker La Porte (Indiana) June 3, 1960 Elkhart wrecker, Englewood wrecker La Porte June 3, 1960 La Porte June 3 1960 18 cars (in wreck) Wreck Rolling Prairie (Indiana) July 10, 1960 34 cars My reason for posting these pictures is I need to do some color correcting on these. Would I be able to do that with Photoshop Elements 2021 alone or will I also need to get something from Topaz or any other manufacturer out there? If so what do I need to get? There is some motion blurr in the last picture from him being on a moving train which I doubt that could be corrected at all from his 1960's camera. Thank you for any help you can give me!

Charles, Consider opening the digital file from PSE open in camera raw - from there you should be able to set a white balance once satisfied with wb you should be able to make other corrections as needed
I'll give one a try if you'd like

Charles, I tried working on two of your pictures. First I used the blur method to try to remove the color cast. While this helped the main part of the image a bit, I found it wasn't as helpful on the sky. The second image seemed to be taken around sunset as there were reflections in the windows and on the side of the train that seemed to indicate that. I use PSCC but think you have the ability to replace sky in PE. I also adjusted the new image to what looked good to me and added a tad....2.2 of high pass sharpening. Others might have a different approach. I think tonyw does quite well with sky replacement so he or another member may have a better suggestion.

Is it possible to open a jpg file in camera raw? As these were scanned at a store I do not have any raw file to open. I will need step by step instructions on how to do anything in Photoshop Elements or any other product. I do own Topaz Sharpen AI and have used that a little but not very much with any luck.

Very neat photos. Thanks. If anyone has any other ideas as to how to improve these pictures I am listening! The previous comments are good. You can open jpgs in ACR. (At least in newer versions.) I played a bit with picture #2 as well. I opened in ACR and "cooled" the temp; changed the "tint"; increased contrast and reduced highlights levels. Then, when it was opened in PSE, I increased green and blue saturation a bit. Can post if you wish. Clive

A quick go at one image.... More or less as described. Looks a bit overdone...a bit garish.

I do like your first sky better than your 2nd sky, although both skies do improve each scene quite a bit! I have replaced skies before, but it has been a awhile and now I have to go back and re-learn how tp do it again.

Helen correctly noted that my first image posted was off color. I agree. Here is another go ...
