Thanks so much for your time and help. You helped me in the past get this started then it stalled out for a few years as life got busy. Myself being from a mechanic background I am used to simplicity equaling reliability. My folder tree just looks to me like a disaster waiting to happen, but I am 60,000 plus photos into a heavily tagged and organized Catalog and just worried about keeping it all together. Every time I upgrade every few years I cringe at the chance of something going wrong. I am coping so far.
On another note I have another question. I posted it on Abobe discussion with no answers. listed under: convert issue 2024. I have PSE 2024 installed fresh on a new computer. I have/had my previous catalog backed up then restored on an external hard drive, all done on a previous version of PSE (on a different computer). I have not converted it yet in PSE 2024, it seems to function as is right now with 2024.
when I do go to convert which I thought I had to do? (see screen shots) when I pick it out from the list nothing much happens. A empty convert catalogs dialog box pops up. if I click find more catalogs box I go to a windows explorer file type window. If I find and highlight and click my catalog 1111 there I go back to an empty convert catalog dialog box, but now it shows, show previous converted catalogs option check box! If I click that box my Catalog 1111 pops up, but with a converted date from way way before I even installed PSE 2024 on my new computer and started using my external Drive PSE previous catalog on it....? My old PSE was 2018 I believe...? (that computer crashed) Question is I thought each years version of PSE required a catalog convert when upgrading to a newer version. My catalog name is still the same as it was before with PSE 2018. Can you tell me what is happening here...? I am confused..? Why does it say it's converted? Is it an issue I should be worried about? thanks in advance

thanks Quick explanation of where I am at with PSE. previously I backed up my catalog to and external drive F: PSE CAT reorganized 2022 07 18 (now its D:). I restored it there and started trying to reorganize it there. my present used photos folders are under paul_, last folder there is the one you can see is screen shot pauls pics. In the process of this my computers SSD Crashed! I bought a new computer and bought PSE 2024 fresh install. I can access my old catalog 1111 on my D external drive with no issues. I have not done the convert action to the catalog yet. Not sure about that step...? Screen shot of top of my folder tree. My desire is to just have in my present catalog a clean folders structure of Photos: and all it's sub folders, named by download date. pauls pics is an odd folder, so its at the end. I have 60,000 + photos tagged If I could do that I would like to move it into my computers internal SSD to a custom location C: PSE 2024 I just want to clean it up before I move it into my new computer and get a fresh start. Programdata: below pauls pics does have a delete option when highlighted now, previously didn't. Can I delete that safely...? without it effecting my tags or anything else...? I just don'y know enough. As to the F: drive letter grayed out I guess that is my previous external drive letter on my old crashed computer. How can I get rig of that old file path being displaced? All Right clicking options are all grayed out! The one single folder 2019 07 11 Photo Scans will not reconnect under the new D: drive letter position on new computer for some reason even if I browse and identify it for PSE...? can't figure that one out..? not a big deal as its just a few photos. I do have one extra backup on a separate external hard drive just in case. Any further help with how to accomplish this GOAL is greatly appreciated. This folder tree going all the way back to PSE 2007 remnants just bugs me.

My current Catalog is ten plus years of various PSE years additions/upgrades restored Catalogs from over the years of restoring and it has become a mess of a Folder tree! Grayed out Folders and previous un-used drive letters & folders and file paths from way back I can see but cannot delete or remove any of it anyway I can find. How can I remove all this old junk from my catalog folder tree and just have the present used position of my photo folders in my Catalog and nothing else..? Pauls pics folder at top and above are all my current used folders, no issues with those.

I just did a fresh install of PSE 2024 on my PC. I want to just bring some folders from my old catalog into my new 2024 My Catalog. How do I copy individual folders between catalogs and keep all my Tags intact? I do not want to just restore Catalog. I have ten years of various PSE years additions/upgrades restored Catalogs from over the years of restoring and it has become a mess of a Folder tree! Folders I can see but can't delete, etc etc. I just want to bring some folders from my old Catalog into my new 2024 My Catalog and start fresh again with a clean slate and have my tags stay intact. Can it be done inside PSE or do I have to use Windows file explorer..? Any help greatly appreciated.

I am overdue for cleaning up my computer and I want to remove some now unused earlier versions of PSE going back to 2014. I use PSE 2018 currently and would like to keep it for now as it functions good for me right now. After glitches, disasters and issues with previous versions while backing up catalog, tags, uninstall, reinstall, converting, restoring, reimporting tagged photo files, etc. I am half scared to do anything with PSE at all now as I am afraid of screwing up and losing my filing & tagging of 50k+ photos. I have long absences of using PSE so I am not the most knowledgeable or proficient at using it! My file tree OS (C:) > ProgramData Thru numerous > > > > > > to MyCatalog > Photos looks to me like total chaos. All my PSE versions are stacked and mixed together it seems. My question is will a full PSE 2018 Catalog backup to an external hard drive before I remove any of the previous PSE versions have the potential to be corrupted by any of the previous versions of PSE…? In the event that my PSE 2018 has any issues after I have removed the older PSE versions (as I’ve heard happens!) and I need to remove and reinstall PSE 2018 I’d really like to know with high confidence that my full backup catalog will painlessly get me up and going again with no issues should I have to use it…!
Any tips at all on the best sequence to take would be greatly appreciated. Any additional file backups I should or can do, tag tree etc..? Loosing 50k of tags & categorized photos scares me to death. I don’t use the People, Events and Places categories introduced in PSE11 only my own categories in their place. Any issues with doing a Disk clean-up after removing the older PSE versions..? Thanks in advance

Any good advice for me before I undertake uninstalling all my PSE Elements versions and reinstalling just pse 18…? I would like to clean up my computer and reduce the disk footprint from 3 Elements versions that are running on it. I do all my work in 18. I plan on continuing to use just PSE 18 but the little I have learned is it could possibly get quirky if I uninstall just the 2 previous PSE version. Tentative plan is to do a full backup to an external hard-drive of PSE 18 (already have one of 14 & 15). Then one by one uninstall all my PSE Elements versions, then reinstall PSE 18 and restore catalog from my backup. Any particular order to uninstall in? Would a backup done before I uninstall anything be any different from a backup done after I have uninstalled just PSE 14 & 15..? Much thanks for any advice that could save me unnecessary aggravation later on.

Finally got going with PSE 18 I had to save/backup the files since my upgrade to pse 18 then restore from my old pse 15 backup catalog to get my 42k worth of people tags back...big relief. I added my previous backed up pse 18 files with metadata to the post restore 15 catalog. A few tag quirks but only with PSE's PEOPLE, PLACES & EVENTS. I am totally done with ever using those tags again. I have moved everything to my own tag format for total control of tagging the way I want. I don't need geo tagging, facial recognition, or calendar only event tagging ever again...I've had nothing but headaches from any of those PSE tags as I have moved through the different Elements versions over the years. Thanks for the help

Thanks for the help....just leery of more problems I guess. all my post restore tags added via pse people are/were bulk delete-table but none that came with my restore..? All events and places are only delet-able one by one no matter what view I choose to use Media, Events, Places, etc. I know it did not used to be that way but that could have been in an earlier version. Anyway I finally moved completely away from using any tags under People, Places, or Events. I Switched them to my own Tags and deleted them all! Works much better under my own hierarchy. I am never touching any of those categories again, they have caused me nothing but grief and many other people the same from what I have learned. I was wrong about the subscription I was thinking of another service I use.

From PSE 2018 I recently restored from my pse 15 backup catalog. Everything seemed to go good or so I thought! Until just now, I have noticed a glaring problem....that since my Restore from my pse 15 backup to pse 18 that I cannot delete any of my people, places or events tags on any of my photos that are in my pse 2018 organizer from the restore off my pse 15 backup...? All the 40k plus people, places and events tags are there intact after the restore, but if go try to delete a people or places tag because I miss-tag someone I can't..! If I click on a photo it will show correctly all the tags it has at the bottom of the tags Column tree on the right hand side under Image Tags. But If I right click on the highlighted image and click on REMOVE KEYWORD TAG the people tags are not visible as an option to remove..! The only visible tags to remove are the tags I have built up under the Tag tree in my own hierarchy. All pse tags such as PLACES, EVENTS, & PEOPLE Tags don't show up as an option to remove...? What is going on here..? I have downloaded some photos and tagged them since I did the restore from my pse 15 backup and all those photos I have tagged that have people tags on them do indicate the PLACES, EVENTS, & PEOPLE Tags when I right click on the highlighted image and click on REMOVE KEYWORD TAG, even works with a block of highlighted photos too. I am confused...why can't pse even see its own tags when it needs to..? I did notice when remove keyword tag does not work on a photo I can go to an INDIVIDUAL Photo, highlight it, then go to the Image Tags box in the tag column and right click the Tag I want to delete and removed it from the image..! But it has to be done on each individual photo, one by one!! I cannot high light a block of photos and delete the specific tag from all of them. Does anyone know if this is a known PSE 18 flaw...? I am slowly working on getting all my PSE People, Places, & Events TAGS retagged under my own tag tree of: My People, My Places, & My Events I just have not completed doing it yet. I am doing this just because of all the hassles I have had with PSE’s tags through the different versions!!! Having to remove a Tag from 500 or 600 mis-tagged photos one by one seems ridiculous. Especial since I am paying a yearly subscription fee now just to use PSE now! Any thoughts or help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Do I convert again or uninstall..? I am trying to figure out what happens or how to fix my problem but no luck so far.
I recently updated to PSE 2018 from PSE 15. PSE 2018 converted my PSE 15 catalog with no problems and all was fine until I disabled facial recognition and I also hit Reset/Erase Face Analysis as I assumed this would remove ONLY the Face Analysis tag results. Bad idea! Reset Face Analysis un-tagged all my photos MANUALLY assigned People tags...40k +..ugh. Before I noticed the tags were missing I had downloaded a couple thousand more photos and tagged them. The json files that store the face analysis data of my images was corrupted somehow..? as it would freeze/lock-up my pc during all attempts at doing a full backup of PSE 2018, once just those files were erased the backup went fine!
The only way I can figure out to fox my problem is copy those photos I downloaded after installing PSE 2018 then completely uninstall PSE 2018 and then starting fresh again by reinstalling it again with a converted PSE 15 catalog with at least 40K photos worth of intact tags. Then upload the couple thousand photos again and tag them again. Tagging 2000 photos vs 42,000 is less daunting! I would appreciate it if anyone knew of an easier fix...?
I don't know PSE 2018 well enough to know how to backup just my recently tagged photos with all the tagging/metadata intact and then reload them after I reinstall PSE 2018...? And not have to tag them all over again. Can anyone help me with how to do this...?
Would importing the catalog again without uninstalling first give me duplicates of all my photos...?
thanks for any help

Slowly learning more and hopefully getting closer to a fix.
I finally did get my PSE 15 to open, all my people tags are intact there! How do I get them to PSE 2018..? When I go to file, then manage catalogs the Convert catalog box in PSE 2018 just shows:
My catalog, Elements 14 Organizer, 0 media items and with the date I moved from 14 to 15.
After Clicking box, show previously converted catalogs, Then my PSE 15 catalog shows up, called: My catalog 11 Elements 15 Organizer, 42000 media items. When it first appeared it showed last modified date as the date I upgraded to PSE 2018, 3/2018. after closing the window and opening it again later (a few minutes) it had changed to the current date & time under last modified..?
My question does this PSE 15 catalog have my people tags intact on it? I did not do my full backup of PSE 2018 until a few weeks ago onto an external hard drive, and no partial follow ups since. At that time, I disabled Face Analysis tags I also hit Reset Face Analysis as I assumed this would remove ONLY the Face Analysis tag(file format that was blocking my full backup) results…wrong!
What happens if I click on convert my Catalog 11 again in PSE 2018…? Does it take me back to where I was when I upgraded 4 months ago? Do I lose what I have done since then? I am very paranoid here now since loosing all my people tags!
Why does PSE 14 say 0 media items when I can open it and see all my photos from that time?
Guidance much needed
Thanks

Just now learned my recent upgrade to Elements 2018 and the automatic face analysis enabled by default with automatic tagging was my downfall. I did not want that so I turned it off. I also hit Reset Face Analysis as I assumed this would remove ONLY the Face Analysis tag results. Bad idea! Reset Face Analysis un-tags all my MANUALLY assigned People tags.
indeed a note on the options screen says that Reset will delete People "stacks" but it does not explicitly say it will undo all manually tagging of people. It give the impression it is just for the face tagging of facial recognition!
Now I guess I have to figure out what I can do with my old PSE 14 catalog to fix my PSE 2018 problem. More studying
Tips appreciated as I do not know how to open PSE 2018 and get to a catalog in PSE 14...? or what will happen when I do?

I can not get to the file menu because PSE 15 will only load to Editor portion only. Clicking on Organizer to open it gives me the message: Default catalog could not be found please open or create a different catalog
Why it doesn't work I don't know? I was under the understanding I could you them side by side if I wanted. When I did upgrade I had been running my PSE 15 in an extended/30 day trail period that had finally expired. previous to that I had used it for several years. When the switch to subscription base happened and my PSE 15 expired I used the 30 day option as I was procrastinating about the move to PSE 2018 and I needed to download some photos quickly.
When I upgraded to PSE 2018 I never tried PSE 15 again until recently when I noticed my PEOPLE Tags had vanished. Also I have face recognition tagging turned off in PSE 2018. When I went to do my first full backup in PSE 2018 the few face tag files that were there would lock-up/freeze any backup attempts I made about 2/3s of the way through backing-up so I deleted the face tags only, not my people tags! My full backup worked fine after that!!
I also have my older/previous version of PSE 14 on my pc and I just now tried it and it opened with no problem! it has 45K + of people tags intact.... now my problem is I don't have a clue on how to import it/convert it..? into PSE 2018 or if there is a way to just import the people tags and if all the recent people tags I have made in PSE 2018 will be affected by importing or converting an older catalog!!! I don't even know what convert means...?
working on educating myself right now but I am a ways off from being proficient at figuring it all out. I just want to use it not struggle with constantly having issues with the so call flawless upgrades in PSE. It's aggravating when I am spending more time studying on how to use PSE than I am spending on organizing my photos.
Thanks in advance any help appreciated

Thanks but my problem isn't after editing that people tag is lost... it is all my people tags just vanished on my move to PSE 2018..! I have not found anything about this anywhere yet. I was hoping there was some way to open my old PSE 15 and import my people tags but I don't now how to do that. I can not open it now!!

I did not notice for a while that all my people tags were gone when I moved to PSE 2018 from PSE 15...! HELP PLEASE....with 50,000+ photos I am in a panic. All my other tags are present, but all people tags are gone...! I am not a PSE expert by any means. I still have my PSE 15 on my pc and I went to open it and I had to reload my serial #, editor opened but when I went to open Organizer it gives me a message that says: Default catalog could not be found please open or create a different catalog.!!
There has to be some way to get my people tags tree back I just don't know how. I have been using PSE 2018 for a 5 or 6 months loading photos into the organizer and tagging them. Not until I went on a name tag search did I resize all my previous tags were gone. Does anybody know how I can recover them..?
I even have my previous PSE 2013 on my pc but I have not opened it in forever.
I have used PSE since 2008 or so and this never happened.
thanks for any help
