Your image comes up as an indexed gif - a single layer. It may be the way it was saved. The lighthouse lights are blinking on my computer. Not sure why they aren't on this post. kdcintx, I'm on the same wavelength as Frank. Your image has only one layer -- Index. The final layer stack should show a layer for every duplicated layer/merged with the background layer. Ex.: One layer for each time you duplicated/merged the lighthouse lights. If size is a problem, Elements will pop up an error message. My latest entry in this challenge is 600px vs 600 px. Elements was able to handle it just fine (and so was imgbb). You can even create larger files. See my animated GIF entry for EP challenge #66. It was a 1000px x 408px file. No problems!

Image from Pixabay. Thank you Tony I did this one at a much reduced size 480 x 397 and as you can see that worked. Thanks again for your help. That worked well - nicely done. Not sure why this happens but I think over a certain size the forum uses a downsized thumbnail version of the image and thumbnails aren’t animated - quite what the limit is I’m not sure but smaller is better! Tried another one......for me the size seems to be the factor. The one that works is 400px. The other is 750. If I click it it will open in another tab. Feeling sorry for the poor fall guy!

for me the size seems to be the factor. The one that works is 400px. The other is 750. If I click it it will open in another tab. There is nothing wrong with the animation itself; it works flawlessly in both sizes. The reason the second image behaves differently, i..e, we need to right-click on it to see the animation has to do with imgbb. Depending on the pixel dimensions of the image, imgbb will handle it according to their algorithm. This means we will encounter these two scenarios (not only with animated images but also with "non-animated" ones). When a small image is uploaded, imgbb will not generate a thumbnail. When a large image is uploaded, imgbb will automatically generate a thumbnail. We have to click on it to see the large image.

Sorry Sepiana, I didn't word that correctly.
Yes, it does work when I click on it but not in the post itself. The post you linked to for EP# 66 that is 1000px x 408px works without clicking. Just out of curiosity what was the size of your 47 layer image?

The post you linked to for EP# 66 that is 1000px x 408px works without clicking. Just out of curiosity what was the size of your 47 layer image? My EP #66 image was posted back in 2016; I believe imgbb was using a different algorithm then. That's why I had to say "Click on the image to see the goal". My 47-layer image was 400px x 400px. When I did Save for Web and clicked on the Animate button, Elements gave me the warning below. As I needed all these layers, I opted to reduce the image size (pixel dimensions).

Thanks, Sepiana. So it seems that there were two different issues at play here. Karen's issue is different than mine and Lillias'.

trying again with image less than 400 pixels That solved the problem. Thank you Tony, Frank, and Sepiana kdcintx, glad to hear the good news. This has been a very intriguing issue. I may be wrong (and, if I am, someone please correct me) but I don't think the size was the culprit. If it were the size, Elements would have stopped dead on its tracks when you did Save for Web > GIF > Animate. No preview, no saving, unless you reduced the image size or reduced the number of layers. But that was not the case. I'm inclined to blame the problem on the way the first image was saved (as pointed out by fotofrank). It was saved as a single layer file -- Index (Indexed Color Mode). Multi layers are not available in this Mode -- Ctrl-J won't work, the Duplicate Layer command is grayed out. This means no layers, no animation. On the other hand, the second image is in the RGB Mode. It has multi layers. As an animated GIF requires layers, Elements didn't object to Save for Web > GIF > Animate.

I don't think the size was the culprit. Agree. There is a size limit and PSE has told me before with a warning. The lake-levels GIF posted is 1,200 pixels X 997 pixels.
