Sorry, I have no idea why the older files do not open in the editor from the organizer. PSE5 was the last version to use catalogs based on Micosoft Access. From the link given by Sepiana, you can see that there were many incompatibility issues with other softwares, Chrome, BitDefender, Real player... The workarounds described on that discussion were really empirical and did not explain the root of the problem. The latest Elements version I have currently installed on my computer is PSE6, which was a big change, especially for catalogs. PSE6 was the first to use an sqlite database.

If I have to go to a later version, will I have to do anything to my existing Catalog for it to be recognized??

If I have to go to a later version, will I have to do anything to my existing Catalog for it to be recognized?? If you decide to go down this road, follow the instructions in this Adobe document.
Converting catalogs from Photoshop Elements 5 or earlier to Photoshop Elements 14 or later
NOTE: Step 1 says "Download Photoshop Elements 13". Click on "this link" to access more recent PSE trial versions.
As you stated earlier you'd rather stick with PSE 5, I thought I would go out on a limb here. This is a very long shot in the dark!
You said these problem files are in the .psd format. Have you tried saving these files as .tiff? Then, trying Organizer>Editor? If you have lots of them, you could use the Batch Processing feature. It is worth a try!

Is it possible to run 2 different PSE5 programs (different disks and different serial numbers), each with its own catalog, on the same computer??
Or run 2 Catalogs from one PSE5 program??
Also, if I buy a new version of PSE, how do I get it to start a new Catalog if version 5.0 and its Catalog are still active on the computer??
Which new version should I buy for Windows 7 Home Premium, 4.0 GB memory, 3.30 GHz processor, 64-bit operating system ??
Thanks for all the help.

Thanks for all the help. - No, you can't run two different instances of the same Elements version. - Yes, you can manage several catalogs from one Elements program - Yes, if you buy a newer version, it will run independently and together with the old version with its own catalog(s) - The usual answer is to buy the current version (PSE2018). But there, a warning that there are bugs in PSE2018 created by a recent update in Windows 10 (1803). So if you can wait for version 2019 (probably in the beginning of October) that would be the best solution. It'll bring new features and bug fixes. You can download the PSE2018 trial version and use it for free for 30 days. If you have registered your PSE5 in Adobe server, you'll be entitled to an 'update' price (- 20%). Your hardware is good for the current version.

Will PSE2018 run without the bug problems mentioned above on my Windows 7 Home Premium, 4.0 GB memory, 3.30 GHz processor, 64-bit operating system ??
There doesn't seem to be much difference between PSE15 and PSE2018, at least in things I think I would use. Should I consider saving some money and buying PSE15 ?? Is there something you especially like in PSE2018 ??

If you have written the tags and such into the image metadata, and not just in the catalog's database, I believe that simply deleting the images from the catalog and then reinstating them anew would be your best approach.
If you do get a later version, KEEP the older version installed; you will most likely find yourself using the old more than the new.
I have E7 and E12 on all of our machines; both myself and my wife only ever use E12 for the "Refine Edge" feature when selecting hair from backgrounds, preferring E7 for everything else.
One weird behavior that can sometimes be an annoyance is that, if the more recent version is already open, the older version will not open; you have to open versions in sequence, the older first.
I gave up on the Organizer and Catalogs quite some time ago for many reasons; I have much better results using a combination of FastStone and digiKam for our organization purposes; both programs are FREE.

The small window in floating windows hits everybody who uses that option. It may be a concern if you expect you'll have to change to Windows 10 in the future. Anyway, you can use the free trial version to be sure. Adobe only sells the latest version. You can still find PSE15 from big Internet resellers but beware of others sources (pirated copies). For me, new features are not the only criteria. Bug fixing and compliance with new OS versions, device drivers and other softwares is equally important. I found PSE2018 was better in this respect than PSE15 and older versions. It's a pity that the last Windows 10 update has created the two bugs, but since you are staying with Windows 7...

I am with Michel on this one. Those two bugs are specific to Windows 10 (v 1803). I have PSE 2018 running on Windows 7. No problem!

Thank you guys. You are so knowledgeable - I have no idea where else I can possibly go with these questions.
I think I'll just buy the latest version after my September vacation. However, I am somebody who likes to understand things and 2 things still bug me about my PSE problems. What is your take on these two:
1) My first indication I had a problem was when I tried to open PSE5 after not using it for many months and it would not boot up - just kind of went sort of white and the Device Manager said the program was not responding.
2) When I reload PSE5 (from either of 2 discs), it works fine on new pictures I bring in (Get Photos) and with some of the more recent old ones. However, if I have to Restart the computer for any reason, PSE5 will not boot up again.
Do these 2 conditions suggest a root cause to you guys (Windows, Catalog, etc.) ??
Could I have the same problem with PSE2014 ??
Does anyone recommend any kind of Windows 7 repair ??

Does anyone recommend any kind of Windows 7 repair ?? A clean install is one way to repair; if you are somewhat well versed in such things, there are packages available that have all the updates that you can install with the new install. I do not know how familiar you are with such things, but you asked could E5 be installed twice; there is a way that it can be on the same machine twice (or a dozen times). Allocate a separate partition on either the main HDD or another internal HDD, install Win 7 AND E5 on that partition and select that partition when asked which O/S you wish during start-up. That would for sure fix your problem and you could then migrate everything over to this new install if you so wished.

I will save that solution as a last ditch one, which sounds plausible, as I am not that familiar with such things. Thank you.
But I am really curious about the possible answers to my previous post.

But I am really curious about the possible answers to my previous post. I totally agree; I just hate a problem that I cannot get to the bottom of, whether it be a truck engine, washing machine, computer, or whatever. However, there are millions of unsolved mysteries in the electronics world that not even the "experts" ever know the what or why of. I have just spent several exasperating days inside my main computer after a lightning strike knocked it out --- YES it was plugged to a huge new surge suppressor and still took a hit. Just minutes ago, I finally got the first activity of life on the screen and then got it to go on and start and then into Windows 7. There is not a piece nor particle of that machine that I have not had out and on the bench during this episode, and tried every trouble-shooting trick I could find. It seems to be almost good as new again and I have absolutely no idea exactly what was wrong and may never know. As for the Windows 7 versus Windows 10 thing, I have had the misfortune of having to work on several Windows 10 machines and I would not allow it be put on any of our machines for love nor money; I will say the same for Windows 8 and 8.1; they should have quit at Windows 7.

You sound persistent like me. Anybody have any comments on the 2 conditions I described a couple of posts back (SEE BOLD ABOVE PLEASE). I am really curious as to what you experts think.
Thanks again.

I have been using PSE 5.0 with Windows 7 Home Edition for a long time. Occasionally when problems occurred, I have had to delete and replace the program. I am good at doing this and I know about the 5.0.2 patch, etc. This latest time, PSE5 would not load at all so I deleted and replaced as usual, but this time I am still having problems. I cannot get a photo from the Organizer to the Editor when the new program boots up. Also, once I close the program it won't reopen again. Has there been some change with Windows 7 Home Edition lately that is causing this problem?? Is there a new patch beyond 5.0.2?? Thanks for the help. Hopefully you have already got your situation figured out. In the future, whenever you have a program to uninstall, and especially if you intend to reinstall with hopefully a clean slate, I have found it very helpful to follow these instructions: www.overclock.net/forum/71-nvidia-drivers-overclocking-software/1150443-how-remove-your-nvidia-gpu-drivers-new-2016-a.htmlJust replace "NVidia" with whatever program/source you are wishing to uninstall. After I started using these instructions, I was amazed at how much stuff was still firmly rooted in the system after even a 3rd party forced uninstall and cleanup. I have had programs that, seemingly no matter what I did, when reinstalled would have all the same problems and preferences that the program had before uninstalling; after following these instructions and obliterating all traces of the program, the re-install is fresh and clean as a whistle. Be sure to empty the recycle bin after deleting all the remnants and before restarting and reinstalling. Be careful as you go along, as you are digging into the registry; if you follow the instructions and don't delete something you shouldn't, you will be okay.
