I have been using PSE 5.0 with Windows 7 Home Edition for a long time. Occasionally when problems occurred, I have had to delete and replace the program. I am good at doing this and I know about the 5.0.2 patch, etc. This latest time, PSE5 would not load at all so I deleted and replaced as usual, but this time I am still having problems. I cannot get a photo from the Organizer to the Editor when the new program boots up. Also, once I close the program it won't reopen again. Has there been some change with Windows 7 Home Edition lately that is causing this problem?? Is there a new patch beyond 5.0.2?? Thanks for the help.

Hi dano, welcome to PSE&M! Glad to have you here.
I may be wrong but I think the 5.0.2 patch is the last one. Have you tried any one of the troubleshooting steps below?
- Run PSE as administrator. - Run it in Compatibility Mode with your OS. - Launch the Editor and/or the Organizer directly via a desktop shortcut.
I cannot get a photo from the Organizer to the Editor when the new program boots up.
I forgot to ask. -- When you go Organizer > Editor, do you by any chance get any kind of error message ? Something like "Attempt to access invalid address"?

By "delete and replace" I am assuming you mean un-install/re-install. Not only with Elements, but with other programs as well, I have often found that what, by all rights and purposes, should have been a complete "purging" of a program, and a fresh and shiny clean reinstall, often turns out to be anything but that. I have un-installed/re-installed different programs, restarted the machine a couple times, opened what should now be a virgin program, and there would be my "last folder visited" and many of my "preferences" right there like they were before I un-installed the program. I have found that numerous restarts between un-installing and re-installing, like at least ten times, and then several more restarts after re-installing, in most cases will set things to rights --- but not always; some programs will dig theirselves in so deep as to revert to their old selves no matter what is done, short of a clean O/S install. I am by no means an expert on the subject; it is just what I have observed in my own endeavors.

Something weird I discovered. My more recent photos (2015 forward) will open in the Editor from the Organizer just like normal. However the older photos will not open in the Editor from the Organizer - the Editor opens but the photo doesn't open in the Editor. No messages come up. (FYI: I did a Catalog Recover when I first reloded PSE5.) Does this suggest any fix to you ??
Thanks again. You have always been very helpful.

Dano -
It might be helpful if you described in detail exactly how you are trying to open your photos.

I've tried every way I know to open from the Organizer - using the Edit button at the top, using Ctrl-I, and using the Edit menu + Go To Full Edit.

Now we can rule out an error message variable. Let's take a few steps back. Are you still having the other problem you mentioned earlier?
Have you tried the troubleshooting I suggested in my previous post?

PSE5 seems to be reopening now (into the Organizer). I've been afraid to close the PSE5 again lately in case I get advise.

dano, A somewhat similar report with PSE 5 (Organizer>Editor) was reported on the Adobe Photoshop Elements forum. The suggestion was to run PSE 5 as administrator. (See Post #2 by clavartist.) According to the feedback in that thread (Posts #5 and #7), it solved this problem.
NOTE: The OP reported back that creating a new profile (account) worked. (See Post #6)

I tried that as you suggested and the program opened, but getting the older files (before 2015) to load into the Editor is still not working. Why would newer photos (2015 and later) open from the Organizer to the Editor, but not the older photos. I took one group of older photos and refreshed the thumbnails, but no effect. FYI: I deleted both the Preferences files before reinstalling PSE5 originally.

What is the format of the older files? .psd, .png, .jpg, etc.?

jpegs with psd version sets - same as the newer files. Thanks! We need to check some other variables. From what I understand, the problem is going Organizer>Editor. Will these .jpg files open in the Editor if you bypass the Organizer by doing one of the following?
- Open the .jpg file directly into the Editor (File>Open). - Right-click on the .jpg file and select Open With . . .

Yes, the jpeg files open in the Editor using File>Open.

I have to admit I am baffled and running out of options. You had said earlier, . . .
FYI: I deleted both the Preferences files before reinstalling PSE5 originally. This is a very long shot in the dark. Delete the Organizer Preferences file.
I am going to bring this thread to the attention of Michel B, an Elements guru. Hang in there!
