For our second photo edit challenge we are using a dng file. This should allow you to edit the image in whatever RAW editor you prefer. The only corrections that have been made are camera profile and leveled. External editors....NIK, Topaz etc. may be used. The purpose is to share your creative vision for the image. Hopefully we can all learn from and inspire each other in this fun challenge. Here are the rules: 1. Everyone will work on this same image. 2. You will have two weeks to complete this challenge and may submit more than one edit. Challenge will end on September 22, 2018. 3. You may not add clip-art, create a composite or use someone else's action. 4. Please be sure to give a summary of what you did to achieve your final look. 5. Comments are restricted to complimenting someone's edit or asking a question about their process. You are not to critique someone's submission. 6. At the end of the challenge the three top edits will be chosen by the person who has submitted the image. 7. Hope you have fun with this challenge. 8. If you have any questions please PM me so that we can keep the posts restricted to edits of the photo and compliments for a particular edit. On one copy I made some minor adjustments in Camera Raw in PSE.
Second Copy took into Nik Collection and applied the following in Color Efex Pro 4 Glamour Glow Film Efex Vintage – Warm Shift Film Type 21 Bi-Colour filter – Violet/Pink
Levels adjustment Then blended copy one and copy two together with the Multiply blend mode. Applied layer mask and brushed away some of the effect to the lower half of the image.  |

Beautiful edit, Lillias! Thanks for getting us started. NIK Color Efex is my favorite external editor, however I tend to use the same few filters over and over. I have never used the Vintage or Bi-Color filters. I will have to try them out.

Helen Thanks for the image I wanted to make the sky and sun the subject. Adjustments in ACR then opened in PSE. Cropped using the golden rectangle for placement of the sun. Applied filters from Nik Color Efex (contrast, graduated neutral density and remove color cast) ACR for final adjustments 2812blog.files.wordpress.com/2018/09/creative.jpg |

Tonal Contrast setting in Color Efex Pro 4 bumped up the Clarity and Vibrance in ACR Adjusted Shadows & Highlights in PSE 18

Pete, what do you mean by "cropped using the golden rectangle"? I know what a golden rectangle is, but is that a setting somewhere, or did you just crop using the golden ratio values?

Really nice photo to whoever took it  Anyway, I did all the processing solely in ACR and PSE with the aim of creating an "arty" sunset image as opposed to maintaining realism which is what I normally do with my photos. 1. Played with WB sliders in ACR to get the bluish and reddish tones in the sky and water. 2. Fiddled slightly with vibrance, clarity and saturation sliders in ACR. 3. In PSE, cloned out the milk-shake container on the sand near the right hand edge. 4. Adjusted the Red and Blue channel sliders in a Levels Adjustment layer to further enhance/highlight the bluish and reddish tones. 5. Added a second Levels Adjustment layer with just the rocks masked in and adjusted the red, blue and green channel sliders separately to try to make the rocks pop a bit more from the image in order to make them more of the subject. 6. Cropped roughly to rule-of-thirds to create a panoramic type view and to accentuate the rocks as the subject of the image. |

In this version I added motion blur to just the water in PSE. To me, the rocks pop out a little more which is what I am looking for. I want the rocks as the subject. |

A great challenge, Helen - thank you for putting it out there for us. I spent time experimenting with this and came up with a very unorthodox workflow for this image. I opened the .dng file in ACR in PSE15, but made no adjustments opting instead to bring it directly into the PSE editor at which point I opened the Topaz Studio plugin and applied the Basic Adjustment preset. I then selected the dehaze adjustment and set the strength slider to .71 and suppress artifacts slider to 1.00. This resulted in a somewhat overall darker and softer image with deeper reds and blues. I then applied a spot mask (opacity .31) around the rocks and surrounding water to effect a bit of contrast so as make that part of the image stand out. Next I selected the HSL colour tuning adjustment to reduce the saturation in the blue channel, but again applied a mask and painted back the strip of blue sky just above the water (not the clouds). Lastly, I applied a slight crop mainly to the right hand side to mitigate the large area of sky which looked too blown out for the overall image. Looking back at my description of events it's about as clear as mud...lol. Clicking on the image will open it in 1920x1080 which is the size I saved it.  |

Took original into CraftArtist and applied Unsharp Mask Applied Old Photo filter which has a vignette to it. Took into PSE Duplicated layers and gave blend mode of Overlay Applied Auto Sharpen to both layers.  |

Thanks Bailey, Sydney and Lillias. I am enjoying seeing the diverse edits to this image and already realize it's going to be difficult to choose my top three at the end. Please note that everyone's image is better presented if you click to see the enlargement. Good work everyone....keep 'em coming!
Lillias, I had never heard of CraftArtist.......looks like a great program for people who are into scrapping. Thanks for mentioning the program.

Lillias, I had never heard of CraftArtist.......looks like a great program for people who are into scrapping. It is Helen but unfortunately Serif the makers have stopped developing it now as they are concentrating their efforts on their Affinity Photo/Designer softwares instead. |
