I am trying to add text to a night time photo where the major part of the back ground is totally black. I have notes taken on how to do this that says: Grab your text tool and draw out a text box the approximate size you need. Don't worry if it's not exact, it can easily be adjusted after you type your text. Click inside your text box and start typing. You can change text size and font if you see it's not going to fit, but again, this can all be done after the fact. When I do that and start typing I see absolutely nothing. So I think perhaps Elements is typing in black so I change the color to white. That does not do anything either. I also tried a NEW blank document but I also get nothing there. When I started typing my size was set to 100 (HUGE!) but I saw nothing but a single line moving along. I changed it to 24 but of course I see nothing. What am I doing wrong? Thank you

Hi Charles, As soon as you select the text tool you will see all the text options, one of which is the color the text will be. Click the color box and choose the color before typing the text. I have made the mistake of thinking that the text would be in the foreground color, but it has its own color selection option.
Let us know if that did the trick for you.

This is probably not much help. What you displayed happens if you are typing and the text is behind a layer. This will not happen when the document is flat, i.e. there are no layers except the background and the text layer. Another possibility is that the text needs tool needs to be set as shown below. Those are the only two things I can think of. Good luck Clive

Charles, The instructions you describe are to enter your text using a Text Box. This technique comes handy when you are working with a lengthy text. If it is just a short text, you don't usually need it. The easiest way to use this technique is to type your text in a word-processing program and, then, bring it into Elements as a copy/paste job. Here are the instructions. Copying Text into Photoshop Elements with the Type ToolNOTE: This technique has some limitations. Another program’s font won’t copy into Elements; it will paste itself as the last font you used in Elements. I did some testing. I wrote some text in Word using the Tahoma font (10 pt). When I copied/pasted the text onto my file in Elements, it pasted as Impact (30 pt), the font I had last used. Fortunately, these limitations can be addressed with either one of the following workarounds. Before you bring your text into Elements, make sure the Type tool is set to the same style, size, and color of the font you used when you typed the text in your word-processing program. OR
After you bring your text into Elements, make the necessary adjustments concerning the font type, size, and color in the Options area of the Type tool.

Thank you everyone for your replies and suggestions.
I do not know what I am doing different this morning from last night, but this morning when I change color, then yes I do see text appear! I am doing the exact same thing as I did last night! Weird!
I will be entering very little text into each photo. What I will be typing is the size focal length each photo was taken in: 11MM Focal Length, 50MM, 150MM etc.
Is there a way when I type in my text that I can tell Elements WHERE in the photo to put the text so all photos will be uniform in location, and not a hap-hazard guess just placing my mouse in the general area which to me would look sloppy? Each photo the text would be entirely different up or down as well as left or right. I would like every photo the text would start in the same location. Is this possible?
Also text size... with the resolution of my new camera (Canon 90D) I just tried a text size of 100 which looks too small so I went to 200 which looks much better. I was surprised I had to big that big to read the text.
Thank you

If you are entering very little text, then, you don't really need to use a Text Box (the instructions you mentioned in your OP). Turn on the Grid (View>Grid). Use it as a guide to start typing your text in the same location in all the photos. If your text has more than one line, keep this in mind . . . When you type your text, Elements will automatically put the text you created on its own layer. This means that once you commit your text by clicking on the green button (check mark) and type another text string, Elements will create another layer. Now you have multiple layers -- one for each text string. Also, you have to eyeball aligning your text on the left edge. When you click to begin typing the second text, if you don't click exactly in the same place underneath where your first text started, the two text strings won't be aligned on the left edge. On the other hand, if you press Return, Elements will create only ONE layer for all the text you created and will align it on the left edge.

Charles you do know that that information is stored in the exif data of all images from the camera.

I copied everything and saved it to a program that I can use to look and re-read everything along with the image you made for me. I just now brought up a grid, but oh my word as you see below there is no way I can use that. I tried changing the grid by using the "size" number at the bottom but I see now that was only for TEXT not the grid. So how do I change the grid size? I was going to ask something else but now.....oh well.... hopefully later I will remember!!

Charles you do know that that information is stored in the exif data of all images from the camera. Hi Frank! You have been a big help to me in the past and for that I truly do thank you! Yes I am familiar with the exif information, but I have never found a good program to show me everything there is to see. What program do you use?I am also curious why you asked me about exif.... how does that fit my asking about about adding text to a photograph other than maybe my remark about the different resolution sizes between older and newer camera bodies....?? Thank you!

The screen shot is from preview on a MAC using the "Show Inspector". I also use EXIF viewer and Lightroom.
My question centered around if the information is embedded in the file, why type it on the image.

To show my friends and family that are not into photography, and know nothing about exif at all what the difference is between using different focal lengths all based on shooting the same image (in this case the moon) what the difference is in focal lengths. I Googled Exif Viewer and came up with THIS. Which one do you use? Thank you!

Right now I need to know how to TURN OFF the Grid within Elements. Since turning on the Grid in Elements, now when ever I open ANY photo it opens WITH the grid with what looks like hundreds of lines within the photo!!! In simple terms can you explain the difference between "Gridline every" and "Subdivisions"? Using Gridline every 1 and Subdivisions 4 that fills the photo with hundreds of lines. (what I see above) If I use Gridlines every 10 and Subdivisions 1 that is better but still not what I "think" I want to use. Thank you!

Charles,
Go to View>Grid to turn the grid on and off. (Shortcut = Ctrl+')
Gridline every -- Use this field to adjust the gridline marks. Subdivisions -- Use this field to control how many lines (if any) appear between each gridline.
