Oh very well done Jacki. Did you do this with your Simplify software? Thank you Lillias, PS first to get the shapes and colours, then into simplify which surprisingly still works ok.

Nicely done, Jacki. It is interesting to watch your progression with this technique. Your squash shadow looks great.

Nicely done, Jacki. It is interesting to watch your progression with this technique. Your squash shadow looks great. Thank you Helen, this was a pumpkin that I found one day in under the jacaranda tree, it looked good when I cut it up, but it tasted horrible, very bitter and woody, should have left it to rot.

What a great result jackscrap! Yes, this technique is much harder than it looks, but the results are well worth the effort. I am not sure what the best way is to produce the shadows. One possibility is to use a graduated brightness adjustment layer clipped to the object that needs the shadow. Another possibility is to use a graduated solid black adjustment layer with a graduated layer mask and adjust the transparency to taste. There may be other easier ways.
Kind regards Chris

Jacki, you have picked a very difficult image, but I agree with Lillias, what you have done looks very good. On something much simpler the Smudge Tool can help and it's very fast. You may be able to use it on at least some of your selections. It's applied while the Ants are crawling around.
Image from a very old challenge.

Can't even imagine 75 layers! This looks terrific. But you obviously have the patience to take it further, if that's something you want to do.

Jacki You could try this for the shadows ... Duplicate the cropped original. Select Filter>Sketch>Photocopy. Settings about 2 for details and 15 for darkness. Place that layer at the top and change the blend mode to Multiply. Add a mask to hide any lines you do not want.

Thanks PeteB, that sounds like a good idea. It's mainly the red around the letters that is giving me grief. I thought I could fiddle with the drop shadow fx, but just couldn't seem to get the angle right. I realise that the signwriting itself is not really done to scale, so maybe I really shouldn't try to match it...it's meant to look simple, right?

Hi Jacki You could try the following ... I used the first 6 letters of your image with the following ... I used the magic wand to select each letter. Placed the selection (the letters) on a separate layer. Duplicate that layer. You should have two layers with the letters — turn the top layer off. Make the first layer of letters active. Select the letters (command + click) and Edit>Fill Selection with red. Nudge the letters to the right (uset move tool + arrow keys). Make the top layer active and then you can go back and adjust the visibility of the red layer. Adjust the color with the opacity of the red letter layer.

This is the final result, I decided that the trauma was too great.... I also have been trying out a pen and tablet, another thing to tax my poor brain. i.ibb.co/bBJZZwd/foundry.jpg
