Three living or inanimate objects (or in combination) are the primary subject of the photograph. They need not be the same three things. Everything I've read says that 3 is the ideal number, so, even though other odd numbers can work, we’re sticking with three for this challenge.
Some information about The Power (Rule) of Three:
The following article goes beyond the rule of threes, but the beginning is a great description--so ignore the part that begins with “The Rule of Thirds”, what follows is old news and isn’t relevant to this challenge: www.institute-of-photography.com/three-magic-number-rule-threes-composition/
Here's my example of a photo that fits the theme:

What a great topic and example image you have provided us with for your first stint at hosting the B/W Challenge, Vicki! The first two images that I came to when looking through my LR catalog.

The first two images that I came to when looking through my LR catalog. Helen, you did a great job setting the bar for this challenge! I especially like the three umbrellas...the composition of this one is really satisfying. Having them in the bottom third of the image and the center-to-right placement makes this really feel like 'the power of three!'. Of course, the sailboats are also great. I really like how you managed to get them all in a row...patience really is a virtue--particularly in photography!

Good topic - I think I've used this row of seats down at the lake for other themes but I was passing by today so stopped by for another shot. Just one sailboat out (it was a windy day) but I thought it appropriately positioned on a 1/3 Tony

Frank, you nailed the topic! (I knew you would!) The pears are actually appetizing (hard to do in black and white) and the cloth draped under them is perfect. I can never make props look that good! Thanks for playing along. Thanks for hosting Vicki! You picked a great theme for the challenge. I look forward to doing some shooting. Thanks for your kind words, Bill. I was a tad nervous doing this for the first time but your encouragement makes me feel that I can handle this and future challenges! I look forward to seeing what you submit. Good topic - I think I've used this row of seats down at the lake for other themes but I was passing by today so stopped by for another shot. Just one sailboat out (it was a windy day) but I thought it appropriately positioned on a 1/3 Tony, I've never seen your benches before so they're new to me and I love this scene! What a great place for a walk--I'm sure it's beautiful year-round. You're right about that single sailboat...it's perfectly placed! Thanks for this great submission!

Cattail and poplar leaves. Today across the road. Clive, two great images and great examples of the challenge topic! I especially like the cattail leaves--not something I get to see often and I find them very graceful! I really like that little insect on the left of the leaf group, too!

I especially like the cattail leave Thanks for your comments Vicki. I should have added that the cattail leaves were backlighted and the background was generally in shade. I agree about the flying insect. I debated removing it, but it seems to add a something. The poplar leaves were in sun with the background shaded. (I cloned out a leaf in the poplar photo.)

I treated myself to a Turkish coffee today which was served as a cup, the pot, and a dish with sugar cubes. B/W was done in-camera with a Fuji X100v, Tri-X Push film simulation. Modest crop and contrast boost in ACR. The table was on a slant, but when I straightened it in post, the coffee in the cup was slanted and looked ridiculous. Sometimes you can't win, but the coffee was delicious. Thanks again for the theme Vicki!

One from the archives - a local singing trio that I did some publicity shots for a couple of years ago - they were sitting in a pew in a church which explains the interesting wood patterns.

Thanks for the challenge. Street shooting makes it difficult to apply the rules of composition. As I looked through my images, I wondered how often did I recognize a grouping of three and did I manage to capture it. Here I was able to capture a group of three musicians. I cropped and framed within the frame. I used Silver Efex Pro to convert to B&W.
