The creator of this image would like to see a balance of the lighting between the inside and outside. 1. Participants in the challenge may provide a screenshot of their edits within the RAW converter of their choice along with the reasons for their edits. 2. Following their initial edits members may use whatever “tools" they wish to create an image that portrays their artistic vision for the image as long as the character of the original image is not lost. You may not add anything to the image that wasn’t already there. 3. Including information on plug-ins, actions, external editors, textures, sky replacements etc that were used will only help to inform members of some of the creative options that are available to today’s photographer. 4. Including layer stacks may be something to consider when presenting a final edit. You have until Thursday September 29th to submit your edits. At the end of the challenge the image creator will select his/her three favorite edits. Comments are restricted to complimenting another member's edit. The RAW file can be downloaded here. You do not need a dropbox account to download. Download button top left. This is a screenshot of the image we will be working on: Hope you have fun with this "challenging" challenge.

This is an interesting challenge due to the dynamic range. On1 Photo RAW used exclusively: nonoise, global tonal adjustments, local tonal adjustments applied with an inverted luminosity mask.

Agree with Peter...a toughie. Exposures from blown brights to quite dark. I made two copies and processed each differently in ACR: one with "ok" exposure inside and the other with reduced window levels. I merged them and tried assorted blend modes to no avail. So I merely removed the blown windows in the image that had been lightened to expose the interior ... this revealed the outside. Not great.

Pete and Clive, it is nice to come on and see that the two of you have gotten this challenge off to a good start. There certainly was a lot that was being hidden in the shadows of the boathouse. And it is definitely a challenging challenge!

Keeping in mind the brief about the balance of light between the inside and outside I thought that the part of the image nearer the door would be lighter than the innermost part of the boathouse and in my initial edit this is what I have tried to convey! RAW settings I used.

Thanks for including your RAW settings and trying to abide by the photographer's desire for the image.

My initial edits for this image were similar to Clive's. I created two copies and edited one for the outside and one for the inside in Camera RAW. Used a H/S adj. layer to bring out yellow and blue tones NIK CE4 Pro Contrast Topaz Sharpen AI And after that, true to my haphazard editing approach, I was all over the place. I did make an attempt to bring out some detail in the barrel and rope in the boat. I lowered the ceiling and cloned out the rest of the bag in the rafters. In the end I decided to crop the image to create a sort of "tunnel effect" leading toward the window.....that eliminated the other two outside areas that I felt were unnecessarily pulling the eye. I selectively darkened the wall with the tools and the bottom of the image. After all of this I am not really pleased with the overall ratio of the image. Nevertheless....here is the result!

Really not happy with my first effort I decided to try this again. Began the process with DXO RAW that rendered the outside lighting better than I was able to get on my first attempt. However it didn't really help the interior. For the interior I adjusted white balance and used auto settings in PS RAW. Followed this with NIK Pro Contrast full strength and detail extractor. Cloned and darkened that annoying (to me) bag and added a vignette.

Great image... I opened in DxO Pure Raw then took the image into ACR. After I made my adjustments, I opened in PSE and tried to adjust the outside view (especially the doorway)... I felt the bright white was detracting. I played with selecting and burning and/or select a blend mode, etc. Eventually I used Topaz Lens Effect to diffuse {the windows + doorway). Finally applied Color Efex filters and then high pass sharpen.

It sounded to me like the creator wanted to keep the photo looking as natural as possible while balancing the light between the outside and the inside of the boathouse. So, that's what I tried to do. Here's my edit: And, here's what I did... First I opened the image and duplicated the layer. Then I took the first layer into Camera Raw and processed it for the inside, bringing up the shadows:
The interior got a bit noisy, so I took it back into Camera Raw and applied noise reduction and sharpened a tad to compensate for the softness it created.
Then, I opened the second layer in Camera Raw and processed for the brightness of the windows and doorway, using the same highlights and shadows sliders but reversed (to taste). Then I masked the second layer, inverting the mask and painted out the bright areas to keep them a tad more colorful: My final step was to use my High Pass Sharpening action to add a bit more sharpening to the image. Here's my final layer stack:
Thanks to the creator for a fun challenge!

So I merely removed the blown windows in the image that had been lightened to expose the interior . I like how your version shows details of the tools on the wall as well as inside of the boat.

Duplicated my initial edit and used the High Pass Filter on the duplicate. Merged those layers together and duplicated again. Used a levels adjustment to lighten the image and then placed a black mask on that layer. Using a soft brush with white blended the layers together. Created a stamped layer... Note to self: Must remember the High Pass filter in future. It makes such a difference.

I like seeing your takes on this Jim and Lillias. This is a hard one especially when trying to be different..! I understand what you are saying, Jim. I think when people start posting their creative interpretations is when we will see some unique edits. Note to self: Must remember the High Pass filter in future. It makes such a difference. A photographer's "go-to" filter I can understand why it may not be one that you have used often, Lillias.
