I am trying to add a lot of text to a photo of a picture I scanned from a calendar. There are several lines, and I have never learned how to do this in Elements properly to make the lines appear even, and each new line starting the same distance from the left edge. How is this done? I did this starting a new text with each new line... it seems there has to be a better way! Here is my example.... Thank you

Charles, I have only PSE6 now as I am away from home. I believe that no Elements version has the option to 'justify' the text (align both on the right and on the left). A possible workaround in your case could be to set the preferences for text to show the Asian options. One of these options allows to decrease the space between letters. So, you write your text with the 'center' option. after that, you select the lines individually and decrease the letter spacing to match the shorter line.

Grab your text tool and draw out a text box the approximate size you need. Don't worry if it's not exact, it can easily be adjusted after you type your text.
Click inside your text box and start typing. You can change text size and font if you see it's not going to fit, but again, this can all be done after the fact.
Note, you can also copy/paste into the text box - by first drawing the text box and then clicking inside and choosing Edit/Paste. (Alternate option to paste into text box - first copy your text from the source and right click inside your text box, "paste" will be an option.)
If text is long, it's sometimes easier to write up your text in a word processing program and copy/paste after. If you copy/paste text into a text box and you don't see all the text you pasted, realize it's there - you just need to grab the arrows on the outside of the text box and make the text box larger and the rest of the text will show up.
Once you have your text box with text in it, text can be changed in two ways:
If you select the text inside the text box first, manipulating the size of the text box, moves the text around while not changing the font size.
If you do not select the text inside the text box first, manipulating the size of the text box increases and decreases the actual font size.
Do not put returns (start new lines) while typing. The text box will take care of everything for you. If you wish to manipulate where new lines start, this, too, can be done inside the text box after the fact. You just need to select the text and edit. You select the text by clicking on the T in the layers panel. That will highlight the text and you can then edit it.
Get used to using text boxes, it's an amazing tool when working with text.

Another program’s font won’t copy into Elements; it will paste itself as the last font you used in Elements. I did some testing. I wrote some text in Word using Tahoma (10 pt). When I copied/pasted the text into the text box in Elements, it pasted as Impact (30 pt), the font I had last used.

Yes, but with a text box, everything is easily changeable. After pasting, you select the text and change font and text size - even the color.
Plus, you can copy text from any source and paste it into a text box.
I find editing and composing in a text box to be cumbersome. With long text, I prefer doing my composing and editing outside PSE and pasting into my text box.
Even if the text pastes into the box and not all the text shows up, you just go to the thumbnail in the layers palette and click on it, then use the text tool options to change font and text size. Plus you can change justification using the text tool options.
Note: I don't know if the later versions of PSE have complete justification, but 11 doesn't. To justify on both ends (so it looks square) select the text and hit Control/Shift/J or with a Mac, Command/Shift/J
Note: You can even use the other tool options, like "create warped text" Although I'm not entirely sure why you want to do this, but...
Realize, your text box can be moved around your project with the move tool, just like any other 'graphic' It can be rotated and transformed using the move tool.
Can you tell I love my text boxes??
The video links Sepiana has provided will give you the visual for learning how to use text boxes.

How about a little warped text: Plus, you can transform your text box using Transform with "skew"...

Sometimes text gets lost on a busy photo. If you are placing text on a busy background, you may want some sort of buffer between the photo and the text. I used a slightly opaque box behind my text, but you can use a solid one, or just brush some color behind your text.

I am glad I read this as I have learned many things about the text box that I did not know; this has been very informative for me. Inspeqtor, that is an awesome photograph; what would make that picture even more amazing is if the uninitiated knew just how huge and heavy that little 2-10-2 is; the smallest part would probably top fifty pounds, and to see it dangling overhead as if it hardly weighed a thing; that picture was definitely taken back when America was strong. Thanks for posting it and I am looking forward to seeing the finished result. On EDIT: Built by Baldwin, she weighed 398,000 pounds (199-tons); see the link: www.steamlocomotive.com/santafe/?page=spI even found a brass HO-scale model of that exact same engine, #3670: brasstrains.com/Classic/Product/Detail/042096/HO-PSC-16816-1-SP-Southern-Pacific-2-10-2-F-4-3670

Charles, here is another possibility besides the Text Box technique I suggested earlier. Do you have Elements+ ? It offers Paragraph Justification (and much more for just $12). And its creator is a member here -- Andrei Doubrovski. This means in-house help (and a five-star one).

What is the size limits of each picture? I can never remember what it is here.... I don't think there are any; if there are, I sure have not been able to find the information. I have noticed that, regardless of actual size of the image posted, they all display in the threads about the same size; maybe the image handling program automatically cuts them to size ?
